Given her success and wealth, it’s no surprise that Dolly Parton has designed her Tennessee home to fit her taste. The sprawling property has enough space to fit her oversized personality. It also has room to lay her beloved pets to rest. Parton has a pet cemetery on her property for her animals.

Dolly Parton likes spending time in graveyards

Ever since she was young, Parton has enjoyed spending time in graveyards. She doesn’t find them eerie; instead, she takes creative inspiration from them.

“That’s not a morbid thing,” she said, according to the book Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics. “I love cemeteries because when I was growing up, that was some of the best kept – you know, people always took care of the graves, it’s like a golf course. It’s a very peaceful, quiet place to go where nobody but weirdos like me really want to hang out. I don’t go there just to hang out with the dead, the dead don’t scare me … it’s the living that’s got me frightened.”

She added that reading the names on the headstones inspires her. She imagines the people as they lived and writes songs based on her version of their lives.

Though Parton has property in many different places, she spends much of her time at her home in Brentwood, Tennessee. Her 63-acre estate is called Willow Lake Plantation. It has extensive lawns, a tennis court, and several barns. Her husband, Carl Dean, spends a good deal of time tending to the land.

“We have a farm and he’s more than happy keeping the fields mowed, the barns painted, and working away on his farm equipment,” Parton told the Mirror.

According to the book Smart Blonde: Dolly Parton by Stephen Miller, Parton’s property also has a chapel and a pet cemetery where Parton and Dean have buried their dogs. Over the years, Parton has had multiple dogs, including one named Popeye. According to Miller, their love of dogs is part of what drew Parton and Dean together. After Popeye’s death, Dean apparently “grieved uncontrollably” for a year.

Dolly Parton is an animal lover

Given her dedication to her pets, it’s clear that Parton is a dog-lover. After performing at the United Kingdom’s Glastonbury music festival, Parton learned that a dog had been abandoned on the festival grounds. When staff found her, they named her Dolly in honor of Parton’s performance.

After the canine Dolly was transported to an animal shelter, Parton was sure to check in on her.

“I had my manager call the Happy Landings Animal Shelter to make sure the dog is being treated and cared for properly,” The Dog People reports that Parton said. “At this time, nobody has claimed the dog, and the dog is in great hands at the shelter.”
