Dolly Parton Responds to the Criticism About Miley Cyrus
Though Dolly Parton has had her fair share of criticism throughout her long career, she’s never been as polarizing as her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus. Cyrus became an overnight celebrity after she was cast in the hit Disney Channel show, Hannah Montana. Throughout the show’s tenure, Cyrus gained millions of fans, many of whom were children and young teens. But it wouldn’t be long until Cyrus abandoned her teenybopper image for one that was much more adult and, oftentimes, scandalous.
These days, Cyrus has become fairly synonymous with the shock value that she often delivers along with her melodious voice. From her infamous performance at the 2013 MTV VMAs to her candid approach to speaking about drugs to skimpy outfits she’s worn in photos, videos, and at red carpet events, Cyrus has definitely keeps the public guessing. And while some fans think “she’s just being Miley”, critics have less than favorable things to say about the “Mother’s Daughter” singer. But what does Parton think about her goddaughter’s more radical choices?
Dolly Parton loved working with Miley Cyrus on ‘Hannah Montana’
Parton has always been candid about the love that she has for Cyrus. The pair consider each other family and their bond was strengthened even more when they worked together for a few episodes of Hannah Montana. In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Parton reminisced on what it felt like for her to watch her goddaughter embrace her first big role.
“But here I am, you know, Miley’s fairy godmother and on the show and kind of sharing all that with her and I really loved the time that we spent with her doing the show,” the Parton shared about Cyrus. “And, for me, watching her being such a pro she didn’t know it but I was watching her like a proud mama thinking ‘You go you little thing I’m so proud of you.'”
The movie star doesn’t judge her goddaughter
And that pride hardly stopped with Hannah Montana. Parton continued on to add that she is still proud of Cyrus to this very day. While the 9 to 5 singer recognizes that her goddaughter often makes choices that are considered polarizing, she feels confident that Cyrus is just figuring out things by herself and she’ll always come out on top.
“I’ve always been proud of Miley she is so talented,” Parton shared about her fellow Hannah Montana alum. “You know everybody complains about all the things she goes through and uh and all the things she’s done, but you know, she’s like me. She’s finding her own space, she’s finding her own things and she’ll always land on her feet. I don’t always have to agree with everything she does, but it ain’t my business that’s her life. I’m just her fairy godmother and I love her.”
We can certainly see why Cyrus has such a deep love and appreciation for Parton. We could all do with a little less judgement and a little more unconditional love in our lives.
