Quarterback Skylar Thompson was selected by the Miami Dolphins with the 247th pick in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He wasn’t meant to be the team’s starter as that job belonged to Tua Tagovailoa. He wasn’t meant to be the backup either with veteran signal-caller Teddy Bridgewater on the roster. But Thompson’s number was called in Week 5 of his rookie season when Bridgewater, who was in for the injured Tagovailoa, went out with a concussion.

Thompson started the following week as well and again in Week 18 completing 20 passes for 152 yards in an 11–6 win against the New York Jets to clinch the team’s first postseason appearance since 2016.

Thompson was named to the starting quarterback role again after Tagovailoa suffered a concussion early in the 2024 season. Now, playing under the bright lights on the big stage again has fans wanting to learn as much as they can about him and his fiancée Bre Newcomer.

Thompson mentioned his fiancée after he was named the starter in Week 3 of the 2024 season

Thompson was born in Palmyra, Missouri on June 4, 1997, to parents Brad and Teresa. In 2004, when he was just 6 years old, his mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.

Thompson attended Fort Osage High School in Independence, Missouri, where he was a starting quarterback, punter, and kicker. In 2016, he enrolled in Kansas State, and by his sophomore year, he was named the starter. After graduation, he entered the NFL Draft.

When he was told he would get the start in Week 3 of the 2024 season a reporter asked: “I know last time when you went about starting, you told us about your dad and telling him the moment. Did you have a moment with your dad when you learned that you would be the starter and if so, can you share what that was like?”

“Yeah, I got to share it with my dad again,” Thompson answered. “It was really, really special and got to share it with my fiancée as well. It was really cool to share that with her as well. My family is excited for me, it’s a great opportunity. You guys know about my journey; it’s really cool for me to share those things with my family members as I’ve continued through the journey so I’m very, very thankful for that and for them.”

When Thompson and Necomer got engaged

Since this is the first time Thompson has mentioned his partner, it’s unclear exactly when they started dating. We do know that they got engaged in March 2024 as they both posted about it and shared photos of the proposal with Thompson down on one knee and a snap of Newcomer’s ring, captioning it: “Here’s to Forever and Always.”

There isn’t a ton of information available about Newcomer except that she graduated from Missouri State University in 2022 and is a teacher in the Smithville school district outside of Kansas City.

In August of 2023, she posted about her second year as a teacher in what she referred to as the “best grade ever.”

Newcomer isn’t shy about celebrating Thompson

Newcomer isn’t shy about posting photos of her beau and marking his special moments and milestones.

In addition to a couple of posts gushing about how proud she is of him, Newcomer makes sure to celebrate Thompson’s special days.

For his birthday in June, she captioned a photo of them together writing: “To the love of my life & my best friend — happy birthday!!! The absolute easiest person to celebrate, I can’t wait to celebrate you for a lifetime.”
