Drake Gets Candid About Why He Kept His Son a Big Secret
It’s been almost two years since the world found out that rapper Drake has a son he had been keeping a secret. Fellow rapper Pusha T was the one to spill the news through song lyrics. Drake himself confirmed a few months later through song lyrics of his own.
Since the two rappers notoriously aren’t friends, the news caused a lot of speculation about why Pusha T outed Drake’s business like that, forcing Drake to clear the air about whether his son was true or not. Now, Drake is finally talking about why he decided to keep his son a secret.
Drake and Pusha T’s feud
In May 2018, Pusha T released a track titled “The Story of Adidon,” which was produced by Kanye West. The lyrics read: “You are hiding a child, let that boy come home… Adonis is your son.”
Adonis, we now know, is Drake’s son. At the time, Drake didn’t respond to the allegations that he was hiding a son, but sources confirmed that he and Pusha T didn’t have a friendly relationship.
Drake and West have also had a falling out, which might be a result of West producing “The Story of Adidon” and playing a role in airing Drake’s business.
Drake responded a few months later with the song “Emotionless” with such lyrics as: “I wasn’t hiding my kid from the world / I was hiding the world from my kid… Breakin’ news in my life I don’t run to the blogs / The only ones I wanna tell are the ones I can call.”
Judging by those lyrics, Drake wasn’t shining a spotlight on the fact that he had a child simply because he didn’t want people digging around in his son’s life.
Who is the mother of Drake’s child?
Drake now co-parents his son, Adonis Graham, with Adonis’s mother: artist Sophie Brussaux. In a recent interview with Rap Radar, a podcast hosted by Elliot Wilson and Brian “B.Dot” Miller, Drake discussed that he originally got a DNA test done on Adonis and the results were a bit confusing.
The results came back that he was the father, but with the stipulation that the results were damaged along the way so the test was not 100% certain of anything. They needed to re-do the test and, in the meantime, left Drake confused, not knowing if he was a father or not. This DNA test confusion led to Drake not announcing the birth of his son to the public since he was not 100 percent sure Adonis was his or not.
Brussaux has stayed relatively quiet about everything. While she posted photos of her pregnancy on social media, she didn’t air the details of the father of her child.
Why Drake stayed quiet for so long
While the DNA test results left some confusion for some time, Drake clearly confided in someone about everything. He confirmed in the Rap Radar interview that Pusha T must have heard about his son from West.
This is especially disappointing because Drake has called West his favorite artist of all time. He said in the interview: “Things have changed. I’m not just some kid that’s a fan anymore. Now we have personal situations and, like I said, a lot of his issues with me, I can’t fix them for him”
Today, Drake splits his time with Adonis while he co-parents with Brussaux. He has said he and Brussaux have had their differences, especially during the DNA test confusion. But they get along well enough now. He looks forward to his time with his now-two-year-old son and has stepped into the role of his father.
