Drew Barrymore regrets referring to the ongoing Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial as “one layer of crazy” and “a seven-layer dip of insanity.”

She made the remarks about the case on The Drew Barrymore Show while possibly trying to empathize with Depp and Heard for having details of their private life made so public. Depp and Heard’s trial is being publicly televised and has dominated the entertainment headlines for the past few weeks.

Drew Barrymore is sorry for her remarks about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

Barrymore took to Instagram to apologize after being slammed for making insensitive comments about the trial. She made the comment from home and not on her show.

“It has come to my attention that I have offended people with making light of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard,” she said. “And for that, I just want to deeply apologize and appreciate everyone who spoke out, because this can be a teachable moment for me and how I move forward and how I conduct myself.”

She added, “And I can be a more thoughtful and better person moving forward because all I want to do is be a good person. I very much appreciate the depth of this. And I will grow and change from it. And I thank everyone for helping me grow along the way and teaching me. Thank you.”

Drew Barrymore reacted to some of the wilder moments from the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial

Barrymore seemed jarred by the level of personal information being shared by both Heard and Depp. For instance, Heard defecated in the couple’s bed in 2016 after an argument with Depp. Depp testified that his bodyguard, Sean Bett showed him a photo of the excrement in the bed when he had planned to return to their home to gather some belongings.

“He said, ‘I don’t think now is a good time to go.’ I thought, ‘It’s the perfect time, she’s not going to be home for two days.’ Then, he showed me a photograph on his telephone.”

“It was a photograph of our bed,” Depp recounted. “On my side of the bed was human fecal matter. So, I understood why it wasn’t a good time to go down there. My initial response was, I mean, I laughed. It was so outside, it was so bizarre and so grotesque that I could only laugh. So, I did not go down there that day.”

She knows how humiliating it is to have private details aired in public

Despite her off-handed remarks, Barrymore knows how it feels to be judged in the court of public opinion. She publicly emancipated herself from her mother at age 14. This was after she was seen partying at clubs like Studio 54 as a child.

She was hooked on cocaine before her 16th birthday and many studio executives wrote her off. “They just wrote me off as damaged goods and I, sadly, understood that,” she said (via The Sun). She eventually got sober, regained her career, got married and had children.

But a public divorce hit Barrymore extremely hard. “When you have your kids, it’s different. You get asked to be the best version of yourself and that was something I didn’t take lightly. I struggle, I fail and one of the most important things I want to teach my own kids — and myself as I grow with them — is that change is so important, change in the world and change in yourself.”
