Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz’s decades of friendship

As reported by People, Barrymore and Diaz have actually been friends since they were teenagers. The Drew Barrymore Show host worked in a coffee shop at 14 when she met Diaz, then a 16-year-old model.

Throughout decades in Hollywood and the success of Charlie’s Angels, the two have remained “besties” for more than 30 years. “We’ve experienced birth, life, death, marriage, divorce — highs and lows, work, boyfriends, friends, travel — there is nothing we haven’t done together,” Barrymore shared.

Now, she said they send each other videos from their closets, dancing and sharing news and information with each other. “That’s our form of communication,” she said.

Drew Barrymore said, ‘Cameron Diaz was really a huge catalyst’ to move toward sustainability

According to Barrymore, Diaz was persistent in convincing her to think about eco-friendly solutions. “Cameron Diaz is really a huge catalyst for me,” Barrymore explained to House Beautiful, “for the last 20 years she has really been on me with sustainability.”

She added, “I don’t like to name drop, but she’s my best friend and it just sucks when your best friend has a name you recognize because you sound like a douche, but I swear I’m not!”

To get back to the point, after Diaz agreed to be on the pilot for The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore started thinking about a gift to show her appreciation. “And for her, it’s not flowers,” she said. “… So I surprised her by getting on one knee and making a proposal to her.”

She told Diaz, “After you barked at me for 20-something years about the person you wish I was, I’m going to become that person starting today.”

“To show you my appreciation,” she concluded, “I am becoming an environmentally aware human being.”

So, Barrymore said she owes the eco-friendly changes in her own life to Diaz in the end. And now, she’s trying to help others see the benefits of living with a focus on a sustainable future.

Drew Barrymore wanted the ‘truth with solutions’ in her sustainable approach

According to Barrymore, certain messaging around sustainability just wasn’t getting through to her. “This sort of Pollyanna approach wasn’t speaking to me,” she shared with House Beautiful, “and I love that Grove broke it down and said only 9% of our recycling really is getting recycled.”

The child acting icon said once she had her own epiphany, it made her wonder about how to get through to others. “So, how do we take that messaging and make it incentivizing and not depressing?” she wondered. “I can’t handle bad news with no solutions. I need the truth with solutions.”

That desire became Barrymor’s approach to her “Beautiful” collaboration with Grove, an adorable line of affordable products. And there’s little doubt Diaz approves of what her influence has inspired.
