Drew Barrymore Says She Was an ‘Idiot’ for Marrying Tom Green
Drew Barrymore has been in relationships with her share of men over the years. However, her whirlwind romance with actor Tom Green is one of her most notable love stories to date. Though the pair’s relationship evolved rather quickly, it seemed like they didn’t think twice about settling down with each other after a few months of dating back in 2000.
However, Barrymore recently revealed that she should have stopped to think about marrying Green, calling herself an “idiot” for tying the knot with him at such a young age.
Drew Barrymore and Tom Green were married for less than a year
Barrymore and Green’s relationship kicked off at some point in 1999. After the Golden Globe-winning actor signed on to produce and star in the 2000s film Charlie’s Angels, she crossed paths with Green, who she wanted to feature in the movie (he was eventually cast as “The Chad”).
“She and the studio were trying to get me in that movie for a while,” Green said on The Alan Cox Show in 2018. “I actually passed on it initially.”
After agreeing to be in the movie, the two began dating. In July 2000, the couple got engaged and tied the knot one year later.
However, their relationship didn’t stand the test of time as Green filed for divorce from Barrymore in December 2001, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
“Drew is a wonderful woman, I love her very much,” he said in a statement at the time, per InStyle. “I wish our marriage could have worked out, I wish her much happiness.”

Though Barrymore and Green’s marriage was one of Hollywood’s most compelling celebrity unions, the 50 First Dates star believes she and her ex-husband were “idiots” for tying the knot when they did.
“We just were young and kind of idiots,” she said during a recent interview on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show. “I didn’t know how to manage myself.”
She continued, “I’ve always said I was a woman in the boardroom and a child in the bedroom. I could go into a studio and pitch… but I didn’t know how to handle things in my personal life… I think Tom needed some time… I think his coping mechanism was to build a little bit of a wall, and I respected that.”

Though Barrymore and Green ceased contact for a few years after their divorce, they continued speaking highly of each other during interviews and public appearances.
In September 2020, the exes reunited for the first time in more than 20 years on her talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show.
“It’s nice to see you every day on [this show], just bringing this burst of happiness and energy and optimism to the world right now,” Green said.
“We’ve lived so much in these last 20 years,'” Barrymore said. “It’s just really nice to come together … I think the world of you and I celebrate you and I always have and I always will.”
While speaking with Stern, Barrymore opened about her reunion with Green, sharing that that moment “couldn’t have been sweeter.”
“I just thought this felt like the right time to say hello and check-in,” she said. “He’s very different. We’re both very different. We met based on respect and we’ve come full circle right back to that respect.”
