After the events of Hulu’s The Dropout Episode 8, there’s an entire Elizabeth Holmes (Amanda Seyfried) trial to encompass an entire season 2. Additionally, Sunny Balwani’s (Naveen Andrews) trial is about to begin, which could be another vital part of the true crime drama. However, the showrunner, Liz Meriwether, told multiple outlets that there’s no way she’s creating another season of the Theranos debacle.

Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes’ trial could be a perfect plot for ‘The Dropout’ Season 2

The ABC News podcast by the same name continues long after the events of The Dropout on Hulu conclude. Journalist Rebecca Jarvis details what happened in the Elizabeth Holmes trial in 2021, including the verdict. Although there are only six episodes detailing the rise and fall of Theranos, the podcast devotes 19 episodes to the Holmes trial. Now that viewers know and love Seyfried in the role of Holmes, it’s likely that The Dropout Season 2 would also garnish great reviews. Many of the same actors could easily return, such as Michaela Watkins as Theranos’ in-house legal counsel Linda Tanner. However, the showrunner refuses to continue the limited series.

Will there be a ‘Dropout’ Season 2?

No, The Dropout Season 2 is not a possibility. The showrunner of The Dropout and creator of New Girl, Liz Meriwether, explained her reasoning to several outlets.

“I am done,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I am completely done. Never to return. I will say, after having done New Girl for seven seasons, I know what it feels like to really, really commit to years and years on a show and its characters. And there’s something amazing about a limited series where you can really just focus for a set amount of time and then move on. And I’m very happy to do that.”

In another interview, Meriwether added that she feels that she took the Theranos story far enough.

“I would love to work with [Seyfried] and all the people who worked on this show again, but this story has gone as far as I want to go with it,” Meriwether told Vulture.

‘The Dropout’ showrunner feels the Uber ending is ironic and perfect

Although The Dropout Episode 8 ending did not live up to Elizabeth Holmes’ real-life conclusion at Theranos, it was symbolic enough.

“This is a new identity and a new chapter for her,” the showrunner continued in the Vulture interview. “Then there’s Uber, another start-up that happened while she was running Theranos. The scene shows how easy it is, in the way we live right now, to reinvent yourself. It’s just changing the name on your Uber account.”

In real life, Holmes reinvented herself differently. While the new CEO of Theranos, David Taylor, dissolved the company and shut the doors, Holmes partied with her new boyfriend, Billy Evans, at Burning Man.

“Indeed, Holmes spent Theranos’s final days, not in mourning, but at the biggest party on earth,” Bilton wrote. “As Taylor locked the door at the company’s lab in Newark, California, Holmes was roughly 375 miles away, dressing in white fur, with pink bug-eyed sunglasses, prancing around the playa at Burning Man with her boyfriend.”

Although The Dropout Season 2 is not going to happen, all eight episodes of The Dropout are currently available for streaming on Hulu.
