Over the years, Duggar family critics have theorized that Jim Bob and Michelle encouraged some relationships into existence. That has never been confirmed. Whether the couples are strongly encouraged to get together or actively choose each other, some couples seem happier than others. Duggar family followers suspect some couples are better suited to each other than others. Opinions may vary, but there is one couple that family followers largely agree seems the most mismatched.
11 of the Duggar family’s 19 children are married
The Duggar family is always growing, whether from marriage or the birth of new children. In the last 14 years, 11 of the family’s 19 children have married.
Josh Duggar, the family’s troubled first child, married in 2008. He and his wife, Anna Duggar, have weathered multiple scandals. In 2014 both Jessa Seewald and Jill Dillard tied the knot. In 2016, Jinger Vuolo and Jeremy Vuolo walked down the aisle.
The following year, Joy-Anna Forsyth and Joseph Duggar each found their perfect matches. Joy-Anna married childhood friend, Austin Forsyth. Joseph married Kendra Caldwell.
2018 brought two new in-laws into the family. Josiah Duggar and his bride, Lauren Swanson, and John David Duggar and his bride, Abbie Burnett, said, “I do.” In 2020, Justin Duggar shocked fans when he announced his courtship at 17. He married just a few months after turning 18 in February 2021. Jedidiah Duggar and Katey Nakatsu held their surprise wedding just a month later; Jeremiah Duggar married Hannah Wissmann one year after that.
Duggar family followers think Jessa and Ben Seewald are the most mismatched couple
Jessa Seewald and Ben Seewald married in 2014 after a nearly year-long courtship. Their longer-than-average courtship doesn’t mean they worked out all the issues in their relationship, though. In fact, family followers have suspected they weren’t a match made in heaven early on in their relationship. In one telling scene from 19 Kids and Counting, Michelle Duggar urged Jessa to be more emotional with her beau.
In her more recent YouTube videos, viewers have sensed significant tension between the pair. On Instagram, followers have pointed out how Ben appears on her feed infrequently. Reddit users have pointed out Ben looks unhappy in the pictures that he does show up in.

While Jessa and Ben’s wedded bliss has been questioned, family critics don’t think all the marriages are unhappy ones. Family followers often cite Jill Dillard and Derick Dillard as the family’s most balanced and content partners. That doesn’t mean the couple is the most naturally well suited to each other. That distinction goes to Joseph Duggar and Kendra Caldwell. Followers think the couple is well-matched.
Jill and Derick married quickly and appeared to experience some early growing pains. Together, they’ve stepped away from the Duggar family, found their way into therapy, and figured out how to work together. They’ve been pretty honest about their life together and have presented a seemingly balanced marriage on their YouTube channel in recent years.
Joseph Duggar and his wife, Kendra Caldwell, are the duo that family followers believe are most similar. Kendra and Joseph appear happy growing their family together, largely out of the spotlight. Joseph and Kendra were raised in similar households and have the same religious beliefs and life goals. Their relatively laidback and upbeat demeanors also match.
