Dylan O’Brien Thinks the Relationship in Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well: The Short Film’ Is ‘Nuanced’
Taylor Swift released All Too Well: The Short Film on Nov. 12, 2021, and the film stars Dylan O’Brien, Sadie Sink, and Swift. The short film features Swift’s song “All Too Well (10 Minute Version),” which was released on Swift’s re-recorded album Red (Taylor’s Version). In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, O’Brien shared that he thinks the relationship Swift depicted in All Too Well: The Short Film is “nuanced.”
What Dylan O’Brien thinks about Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well: The Short Film’
In All Too Well: The Short Film, Sink and O’Brien star as a young couple, known as Her and Him. The short film documents the start of their relationship and breakup. All Too Well: The Short Film primarily focuses on the heartbreak Sink’s character feels over the breakup.
Swift plays Her years later, and the short film’s ending reveals that Her went on to write a book about the relationship called All Too Well. During a reading of the book, Him watches Her from outside while wearing Her’s old scarf that she left behind after the breakup.
At the premiere of All Too Well: The Short Film, O’Brien chatted with Entertainment Tonight about the relationship depicted between Her and Him and Swift’s writing skill.
“I mean, so much credit to Taylor,” O’Brien told Entertainment Tonight. “Because, yeah, I mean it’s not easy to I guess achieve something like that. It’s such a nuanced relationship dynamic. It’s really hard to execute.”
Dylan O’Brien thinks Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well: The Short Film’ was ‘set up for success’
“All Too Well” was already one of Swift’s most acclaimed songs. With “All Too Well (10 Minute Version” and All Too Well: The Short Film, Swift ended up ushering in even more acclaim for the material.
In addition to appearing in All Too Well: The Short Film, Swift also wrote and directed the short film. At the premiere of All Too Well: The Short Film, O’Brien was complimentary of everything Swift did for the project.
“The stage that she set though, just even in her lyrics, and in her vision for the film, and the lookbooks, and the situations that she put us in made it really easy I think,” O’Brien told Entertainment Tonight.
He continued, “Because there was such authentic, insightful situations. It’s just about being set up for success, you know? There was never a moment where l felt like it wasn’t easy. And I think that’s a lot to do with her.”
‘All Too Well’ is a fan-favorite song
Even since Swift released the original version of Red in 2012, “All Too Well” became a favorite by fans and critics alike even though it was never a single.
While Swift is re-recording her first six albums as a way to reclaim her masters, it has also allowed her to give fans new content that they will enjoy. With Red (Taylor’s Version), Swift gave fans the 10-minute version of “All Too Well” and a short film for the song when the original did not get a music video.
