Ellen DeGeneres’ New $49 Million Mansion Was Paid for in Cash and Has This Insane Feature
Ever wonder what $49 million is cash looks like? Ellen DeGeneres knows! The Emmy winning talk show host and her wife, Portia de Rossi, were revealed as the buyers of a $49 million compound in Montecito, California.
The home was sold by Saturday Night Live alum Dennis Miller and wife Carolyn Espley-Miller in late September. It was originally an off-market sale and the buyers were kept anonymous, but new reports revealed that it was, indeed, DeGeneres and de Rossi who acquired the massive estate, and they reportedly paid for it in cash.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are obsessed with buying and selling mansions
According to the Wall Street Journal, the purchase of the compound was one of the most expensive property sales ever in Santa Barbara County. Miller and his spouse have owned the vast property since 2006.
This is far from DeGeneres and de Rossi’s first exorbitant real estate investment. According to Celebrity Net Worth, they have bought and sold over 20 properties since 2003, and they frequently end up selling the homes to fellow celebrities. Will Ferrell, the late Heath Ledger, Ryan Seacrest, Napster creator Sean Parker, and Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins have all bought homes in California from the couple. In 2006, they sold a Montecito estate to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and in 2011, Kim Kardashian married Kris Humphries there, according to Variety.
When they’re not flipping homes to sell to famous people, they’re buying homes from famous people. In 2011, the couple bought Brad Pitt’s former home in Malibu for $12 million and sold it the following year for $13 million. In 2019, they bought Adam Levine’s Beverly Hills mansion for $42.5 million, which they still own. According to Variety, the house is available for viewings for qualified buyers.
It’s not clear if the married couple will be moving into this new mansion. They already live in Montecito, so it wouldn’t be much of a change, and they would still remain neighbors with Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, who moved to Montecito earlier this year.
DeGeneres and de Rossi’s new mansion is a massive Montecito compound
Variety reports the compound spans 4.3 acres and boasts five separate buildings. The main structure is a 9,000 square-foot South African Cape Dutch-style house. The other buildings include a guest house, a huge garage, a barn designed by architect Tom Kundig, and a poolhouse.
The entire estate is surrounded by walls and gates, and at the center of the property is a lily pond that’s big enough to be considered a small lake. The lake has its own rowboat. And if a private lake weren’t enough, the property also has an infinity pool that overlooks the entire compound, and there are several criss-crossing paths throughout the property. The compound has enough space for 30 or more cars to park, and it has hidden outdoor seating areas strewn throughout the land.
It’s hard to imagine DeGeneres and de Rossi not wanting to move into this house. Who wouldn’t?!
