The Frozen 2 trailer is finally here and it’s all at once exciting and puzzling: what is Frozen 2 about? The Frozen 2 teaser trailer is raising some questions online, as there is no dialogue and no songs featured, and it looks a little darker and scarier than the original.

Frozen 2 trailer features Elsa vs. the ocean

The trailer opens with Elsa facing off against the ocean, crashing, dark, and angry amid a storm. It’s definitely a challenge for Elsa, who ditches her cloak and ties back her hair, giving a sigh before she runs full force towards the water. Her first attempt to blaze an icy trail across the sea is thwarted by a giant wave and she begins again, showing more determination.

This time, she jumps through a wave, lands on rocks, and begins to fall, as she shoots an ice slide down and continues her sprint across the water, all the while an ominous orchestral arrangement plays. She continues her icy path upward, as the ice breaks beneath her, sending her falling backwards.

Is Frozen 2 telling a darker story?

The trailer then says “This Fall” and we get our first glimpse at Anna, standing perplexed on a balcony and Kristoff racing through a forest on his reindeer Sven, with a herd of other reindeer. Anna climbs and jumps in a dark and misty place and Elsa and Olaf seem to be in danger.

With little to go on, fans are left wondering what this sequel will be about. At one point, Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf stare across the valley, before the screen goes black and a single leaf floats down and through the ‘O’ in the Frozen II title.

What’s with Anna and the sword?

As the trailer comes to an end, the characters are seen in the forest, with their backs to the audience, when suddenly Anna spins around, sword in hand, slashing at what can only be assumed to be a villain or other evil doer.

It’s unclear what dangers are ahead for the characters, but fans are already getting excited to see the cast return for another adventure. Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad are all back to reprise their roles.

What we know about Frozen 2

While fans will need to wait until the fall to find out what’s in store for the characters, Frozen 2 co-director Jennifer Lee gave some hints when speaking to Variety in November 2018. Lee called the animation in the sequel “bigger [and] more epic” than the original, explaining, “They’re going to go far out of Arendelle.”

Frozen 2’s release date is set for November 22, 2019.

Chris Buck, one of the directors, hinted at an evolution of Elsa, telling Fandango: “[In Frozen] she had such a dramatic journey, and at the end she’s just starting to feel like she can open up and have some fun again. That’s what was really good about the short [2015’s Frozen Fever ] — we could have fun with Elsa. And that personality… you will see in the next one.”

Josh Gad provided this clue about Frozen 2

Actor Josh Gad, who voices Olaf, posted an image of the Frozen 2 teaser poster on Instagram, with this hint for fans: “If you look hard enough, this teaser poster will reveal quite a few surprises (like how pretty a snowflake is up close). #Frozen2 #November.”

One fan guessed: “3 new characters with spring magic, summer magic and autumn magic?”
