‘Emily in Paris’ Season 2: Ashley Park Dishes on Her Awkward Behind-the-Scenes Wardrobe Malfunction
Ashley Park might look très chic as Mindy Chen in Emily in Paris Season 2, but her fashion wasn’t always fabulous behind the scenes. The singer and actor, who earned her big break in Netflix‘s Paris comedy, opened up about her time on set in a recent interview. Park revealed what it was really like to film in France (spoiler: “very cold”) and told the story of a less-than-ideal wardrobe fail she experienced during a filming break. Here’s what happened.
‘Emily in Paris’ star Ashley Park shared a behind-the-scenes season 2 fashion fail
Speaking to Elite Daily, Park shared the story behind a photo she took with co-stars Lily Collins (Emily Cooper) and Camille Razat (Camille). The image, which she posted on Instagram in November, showed the three actors huddled up together in puffer coats and fluffy robes. According to Park, they took the photo in the chilly South of France; in season 2, Emily, Mindy, and Camille leave Paris to visit St. Tropez on a girls’ trip.
“We are in our coats that were our best friends for the entire season. France was just very cold. We started filming in April, and we were acting like it was the summer, so especially at nighttime, we were always in our cozies,” she explained.
Many fans loved the cozy picture, but they didn’t know what happened soon after it was taken.
“What’s very funny about this — keeping warm with each other, huddling close — is that the dress I’m wearing, that is a full latex white dress,” Park recalled. “We were filming all night. Oh my gosh, this is the opposite of the glam world. I remember getting up, and because it was so cold and then warm and all this stuff, my latex dress just split.”
Oof. Park added that she wasn’t quite finished filming her scenes as Mindy yet, so the wardrobe department had to improvise.
“I remember Lily’s dressers and my dressers just trying to duct tape it from the inside, and we were like, ‘This is quite funny,'” she concluded.
Ashley Park teased one of her favorite scenes as Mindy
Aside from the wardrobe malfunction and the chilly air, Park told Elite Daily she had a blast filming season 2. She detailed a scene on the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris that felt “really special” to her.
“In this scene, I’m about to sing one of my favorite songs from a Broadway show I really love, a really special rendition of it,” she said. “I was really excited that we got to do this one, and it goes really beautifully in with not just Mindy’s story, but also with a lot of the other storylines, too. And Katina Medina Mora, who is our director for this episode, really shot it beautifully.”
On the other hand, that Emily in Paris scene had its not-so-glamorous moments, too. Park explained that it rained a lot during filming, which didn’t pair well with the cold.
“I got tonsillitis because it’s freezing on this bridge,” Park added. “We had to shut down production because it was pouring rain, and so me and Lily in our costumes just ran to her apartment that was nearby. That was a special day.”
‘Emily in Paris’ Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix
Emily in Paris Season 2 follows Emily as she settles into life in Paris. Fans see her embrace French culture and fashion a bit more, and she deals with the aftermath of her love triangles. Meanwhile, viewers also get a closer look at Mindy’s ambitions and even her own love life, Park told Cosmopolitan.
“We get to see very different aspects of her, different facets of her, whether it be insecurity or vulnerability, and we see a lot more of her internal life,” Park said. “And also, her put in situations where she’s kind of thrown off.”
