It might be au revoir to Emily in Paris for Lucas Bravo. The 36-year-old French actor is over the  “lack of communication” keeping his character, Gabriel, and Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) apart. So much, in fact, that he’s ready for acting jobs outside the Netflix original series as Gabriel and Emily’s “archaic” storyline continues.

Gabriel and Emily’s ‘lack of communication’ is dated to Lucas Bravo

Bravo didn’t hold back in an interview with French publication Le Figaro. The Emily in Paris star, who has played Gabriel since the show began in 2020, shared his frustration about Emily and Gabriel’s romance in season 4, which hit Netflix in August 2024.

“Everything is based on a lack of communication,” he told the publication (via The Independent). Remember when Gabriel ditched skiing newbie Emily on the slopes? Or when he argued with her in French as she stood by unsure of what he said?

“It’s a bit archaic,” Bravo said of the characters’ on-again-off-again romance. “These days, the new generation verbalizes, they confront. And that no longer works in this case. We do not understand each other.”

“People see this mechanism coming from miles away,” he explained. “And I don’t want to be part of a cog that tends not to consider the intelligence of the audience.”

Bravo wants ‘freedom’ beyond ‘Emily in Paris’

The actor continued, saying the time spent filming Emily in Paris is something else to consider. “Life is short,” Bravo said. “It takes five months to shoot this series. Do I want to sacrifice them by telling [a story] that does not stimulate me?”

“I don’t really like what it’s becoming and where this storyline is going,” he added saying he wants to explore outside the show. “I don’t really have any freedom [in Emily in Paris] and as people are starting to give it to me elsewhere, I am getting a taste for it.”

On top of that, Bravo is connecting with his character. “I don’t understand him anymore,” he said of Gabriel. “But we’ll see…[creator] Darren [Star] has plans. I’m just following it.” Asked if he’d return for Emily in Paris Season 5 Bravo said, “It will depend on the script.”

It was off to Italy for Gabriel at the end of Emily in Paris Season 4. Upon learning that Emily had gone to Rome, Italy, to head up Savoir’s new office, the talented chef got some inspiring words from Alfie (Lucien Laviscount).

“Don’t let your pride and misunderstanding get in the way of the greatest girl in the world. We both did,” Alfie told him in a nod to their failed romances with Emily.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Gabriel, Emily got settled in her new apartment before hopping on the back of Marcello’s (Eugenio Franceschini) vespa and—gasp—leaving her phone behind.

Will Gabriel profess his love for Emily on a surprise visit to Italy? Will she return to Paris with him to give their relationship another chance? Or will she stay in Italy as her romance with Marcello blossoms? Fans have to wait until Emily in Paris Season 5 to see how things play out for Emily and Gabriel but also Bravo.
