Emmys 2021: ‘The Crown’ Stars Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin Are Nominated for the Same Award
Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana are competing at the 2021 Emmy Awards. Well, sort of. Actors Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin are nominated for the same award. They are up for an Emmy for their performances as the queen (Colman) and the late Diana (Corrin) on The Crown.
Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin joined the cast of ‘The Crown’ in seasons 3 and 4
Colman began playing the leader of the British royal family in The Crown Season 3. Previously, the role had been played by Claire Foy in seasons 1 and 2. So in what era did Colman play the monarch? She played the queen through the events of the ‘70s and ‘80s, including the introduction of Corrin’s young Diana in season 4.
Despite their critically acclaimed performances on The Crown, Corrin and Colman’s time the actors’ time on the series is over. That’s because the Netflix original series is known for recasting characters almost every season. Elizabeth Debicki is the show’s new Diana in season 5 alongside Harry Potter alum, Imelda Staunton, as the ‘90s version of the queen.
‘The Crown’ actors are up for the same 2021 Emmy Award for their performances as Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana
The Crown has two cast members up for the best actress Emmy. Colman and Corrin are both nominees in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. According to the Television Academy, their fellow nominees are In Treatment’s Uzo Aduba, Lovecraft Country’s Jurnee Smollett, Pose’s Mj Rodriguez, and Elisabeth Moss of The Handmaid’s Tale.
‘The Crown’ is nominated in other categories and it’s already won 1 Emmy
Colman and Corrin aren’t The Crown’s only hopes of winning an Emmy. Far from it because the Netflix series has a whopping 24 nominations. As a result, there are plenty of other opportunities to snag an Emmy. So what are they? Some of the show’s other nominations are as follows:
- Josh O’Connor (Prince Charles) – Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
- Gillian Anderson (Margaret Thatcher) – Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
- Helena Bonham Carter (Princess Margaret) – Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
- Emerald Fennell (Camilla, Duches of Cornwall) – Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
- Tobias Menzies (Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh) – Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
- Charles Dance (Lord Louis Mountbatten) – Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series
- Outstanding Drama Series
Despite not knowing whether or not Colman or Corrin will win, The Crown already has a 2021 Emmy. Foy won a Guest Actress Emmy for her cameo in season 4.
Emma Corrin and Olivia Colman have already won multiple awards for ‘The Crown’
This isn’t the first time Corrin and Colman have been up for awards for The Crown. In fact, they’ve already won major awards for their portrayals of the queen and Diana. Because of her performance, Corrin now has a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Critics’ Choice Award. Whereas Colman’s accolades for The Crown include a Golden Globe and multiple SAG Awards.
