Will Nathan or Lucas win the fight for Elizabeth’s heart on When Calls the Heart? Erin Krakow isn’t spilling any secrets about the upcoming season of the Hallmark Channel series. But the actor who plays Elizabeth Thornton did promise Hearties that there won’t be any shortage of swoon-worthy moments when the show does return to TV.

Season 7 of When Calls the Heart ended on a major cliffhanger. Early on in the season finale, it seemed Lucas (Chris McNally) had succeeded in winning over the widowed Elizabeth. First, he helped her land a book deal. Then, he planned a romantic candlelit dinner to celebrate her big accomplishment.

But in the final moments of the episode, mountie Nathan (Kevin McGarry) appeared to have died in the line of duty, a tragedy that would have echoed the death of Elizabeth’s first husband Jack (Daniel Lissing) in season 5. When Nathan returned safe and sound to Hope Valley, Elizabeth rushed into his arms. For many viewers, that hug was all the proof they needed that Elizabeth had chosen Nathan over Lucas. But despite some strong evidence that Krakow’s character has feelings for Nathan, the love triangle hasn’t been definitively resolved.

Erin Krakow teases a romantic season of ‘When Calls the Heart’

Many Hearties have strong opinions about which man Elizabeth should choose, declaring themselves members of either Team Nathan or Team Lucas. But anyone hoping Krakow will spill the beans about who Elizabeth will choose is destined to be disappointed.

“I don’t plan to share any details right NOW,” she tweeted on Sept. 27. “Just wanted to assure you all that there will be romance in S8. Trust me.”

Many people interpreted Krakow’s statement to mean we’d see a romance for Elizabeth in season 8. But others noticed that her words seemed deliberately vague. The upcoming romance could involve characters other than Elizabeth, Nathan, and Lucas, they pointed out on Twitter.

While many When Calls the Heart fans are eagerly awaiting season 8 (which will air sometime in 2021), at least one is not happy with the direction Elizabeth’s story is headed.

The critic was unhappy that Elizabeth was moving on after the death of her husband. The character should remain true to her first husband rather than pursuing another relationship, the person argued.

“You must still be hurting from Dan’s exit,” Krakow replied. “I’m sorry. I’m sure that hurts. I just think we see love differently. I don’t believe Elizabeth should have to “be true” to Jack until she dies. New love doesn’t cheapen what J & E had. I’m here if you want to talk, without name calling.”
