‘Eternals’: Angelina Jolie’s Character Is a Terrible Babysitter in New Trailer
Like most Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, not a lot is known about Eternals or its characters. Of course, fans can turn to comic books for information, but no one truly knows what will go on in the film until they sit down to watch it in theaters. Thankfully, Marvel has been extra generous lately and released a couple of new 30-second trailers for Eternals. And in one of the videos, fans can see more of Angelina Jolie’s character’s personality. To be more specific, she’s definitely a better warrior than she is a babysitter.
The new ‘Eternals’ trailer gives us insight into Angelina Jolie’s character
In the new TV spot for Eternals, Kumail Nanjiani’s character, Kingo, calls the group of superheroes “The greatest warriors the world has ever known.” And by the looks of it, the Eternals are a diverse group with crazy superpowers. However, one of the characters is not that great with children.
Later in the video, which you can view below, Angelina Jolie’s character, Thena, watches over Phastos’, played by Brian Tyree Henry, son. He asks her what her superpower is, so she shows him. Thena manifests a spear and uses it to pierce an orange, and then she gives the fruit to him. The video cuts to Phastos saying “You know that your babysitting privileges are completely revoked, right?”
Thena is an all-powerful, immortal being that can take down an entire army. But she would make for a terrible babysitter if the new trailer is any indication.
What else do we know about Thena?
Angelina Jolie’s character, Thena, is described as “an elite warrior Eternal who can form any weapon out of cosmic energy, and develops a close bond with Gilgamesh over the centuries.” Gilgamesh is the strongest of the Eternals, and Don Lee plays him. Thena is also known to be a scholar with a gifted intellect, which could have been influenced by her time with Gilgamesh.
Jolie recently discussed Eternals with Total Film. When asked about her character and training for the role, Jolie said, “I was given the ‘could manifest weapons in my hands’ [power]. A lot of my training was really fun, to try to figure out how to fight that way.”
In the comic books, Thena fell in love with Kro, one of the Deviants. Thena eventually got pregnant with twins, but she transferred them inside of a mortal woman, Ms. Ritter, who raised them as her own. So, the MCU film might pull from that storyline a bit, given that Thena does not seem to have children in Eternals. And Kro is slated to appear in the movie, so his love affair with Thena may play a central part.
‘Eternals’ is coming soon to theaters
The new MCU film’s premise reads as, “The Eternals, a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers who have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years, reunite to battle the evil Deviants.”
Eternals features an ensemble cast who all play never-before-seen characters in the MCU. The film stars Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie as the Eternals. Oscar-Award winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao directed the film.
Eternals premieres on Nov. 5 exclusively in theaters.
