‘Eternals’ Took Marvel’s Worst Rotten Tomatoes Score from ‘Thor: The Dark World’
Marvel’s Eternals attained a new record for the studio. However, it’s not a record you want your movie to set. Despite having a massive scope and expanding the universe, Eternals has taken the title of Marvel’s worst Rotten Tomatoes score from Thor: The Dark World.
‘Thor: The Dark World’ has held Marvel’s worst Rotten Tomatoes score since 2013
With a juggernaut like Marvel, it’s easy to forget that before Eternals took Marvel’s worst Rotten Tomatoes score, Thor: The Dark World held that title first.
Iron Man proved such a successful movie that it kick-started the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, that meant Captain America and Thor had an uphill climb.
Fans saw the first Thor movie as good enough. It did not blow people away like Iron Man. Captain America: The First Avenger was considered the weakest film and character before the Avengers.
However, after 2012’s The Avengers, sequels came out and flipped that script.
Captain America: Winter Soldier catapulted Chris Evans’ character into the spotlight, while Thor: The Dark World hurt the character’s reputation.
While Thor: Ragnarok managed to revitalize the hero, the second Thor movie remained an unfortunate stain for Marvel.
First reviews for ‘Eternals’ set it 10% above ‘Thor: The Dark World’
When the first Rotten Tomatoes scores came in for Eternals, it did not seem too concerning. It was not the strongest Marvel movie, but it was far from the worst. It sat around 76%.
However, that number started dropping.
As of Oct. 28, the critic score sets the movie at 63%, putting Eternals 3% below Thor: The Dark World.
The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads: “An ambitious superhero epic that soars slightly more often than it strains, Eternals takes the MCU in intriguing — and occasionally confounding — new directions.”
While Eternals took the worst Rotten Tomatoes score from Thor: The Dark World, the score still signals that the movie is good, faring far better than several DCEU films.
However, it’s not Marvel good. After churning out hit after hit for more than a decade, Kevin Feige and the studio set a high bar for their movies.
Should you go see ‘Eternals’ even if it has Marvel’s worst Rotten Tomatoes score?
Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing film of all time. However, a massive smash hit does not come around often.
Despite Eternals taking Marvel’s worst Rotten Tomatoes score from Thor: The Dark World, that score only comes from critics.
Joaquin Pheonix’s Joker is considered a modern-day classic and sits at 68%, while fans’ reception put it 20% higher.
It is important to remember that Rotten Tomatoes scores come from individuals. If the critics that reveal a movie do not care for it, that does not mean someone else can’t enjoy it.
And fans can see for themselves when Eternals releases on Nov. 5, 2021.
