‘Euphoria’ Fans Aren’t Expecting Season 3 Until 2024
It’s only been two days since the Euphoria Season 2 finale premiered, but fans are already looking ahead to season 3. The sophomore season of the hit HBO show certainly ended with a lot of cliffhangers and unanswered questions. Fortunately, for fans, it was announced that the show was renewed for a third season before the second season even finished airing. But it could be quite some time before fans get new episodes of the show on their screens.
The gap between Euphoria Season 1 and Season 2 was pretty substantial. The first season premiered back in June of 2019. However, the second season didn’t premiere until January of 2022. Thanks to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, production for season 2 was put on hold for months. This resulted in a 2.5-year gap between the seasons. Now, some fans are expecting a similar time gap between season 2 and season 3.
‘Euphoria’ Season 3 likely won’t premiere until 2024 at the earliest
Recently, a Euphoria fan interviewed Donny Davy (the show’s makeup artist) and caused speculation about Season 3 premiering in 2024. “#Euphoria production update: I interviewed Donni Davy today and she mentioned that she *heard* they could potentially shoot season 3 later this year,” the fan penned on Twitter. “(Not confirmed.) Each episode takes a month to film, so by the time it goes through post, it’s safe to expect a 2024 release.”
Why does the HBO show take so long to film?
But why does a single episode of Euphoria take so long to film? A month certainly isn’t typical for just one episode of a TV show. Part of it has to do with the overall pacing of the show. In an interview with BUILD, Alexa Demie (who plays Maddy Perez) explained that the show is filmed differently.
“It doesn’t shoot like typical TV,” Demie said of filming Euphoria. “We take and bit longer and I feel like every episode is shot more like a film.” Part of the reason Euphoria has more of a movie feel is because of its larger-than-life cinematography. The shots are incredibly technical and take a lot of time to set up and shoot. Furthermore, a lot of shots are filmed in just one take, which makes for an even more intricate process.
The show’s intricate cinematography requires a lot of time
In Season 2, Marcell Rév (Euphoria’s cinematographer) made things even more challenging for himself by shooting exclusively on film. While this can produce a truly stunning effect, it can also cause delays if the camera rolls out and the cast and crew are forced to reshoot the scene.
The ‘Euphoria’ cast is booked and busy
But the pacing isn’t the only thing that could cause a serious delay between Euphoria Season 2 and 3. Nor is the technical filming and editing process. One of the biggest things that might slow down production is scheduling conflicts. The dark drama features a large ensemble cast, but many of the actors have booked other projects that will likely be filmed prior to Euphoria Season 3.
Zendaya, who headlines the show, is set to film Dune: Part 2 and The Challengers in the coming months. Meanwhile, Sydney Sweeney is currently filming National Anthem. She also is producing and starring in The Players Table, which is also set to premiere on HBO. And those are just two members of the cast. Trying to find a time to shoot Euphoria Season 3 that accounts for the actors’ schedules could be challenging.
Some ‘Euphoria’ fans are upset they’ll likely have to wait two years for Season 3
Naturally, fans aren’t thrilled about potentially waiting years for new episodes of the hit show. “If Euphoria season 3 actually comes out in 2024 I’m hibernating until then because I can’t handle that long of a wait,” one person shared on Twitter. Waiting a week in between episodes has been difficult enough.”
Only time will tell if fans will actually have to wait until 2024 (or longer) for Euphoria Season 3. But, even if they don’t, they shouldn’t be expecting any new episodes anytime soon.
