‘Euphoria’: Sydney Sweeney Argues Nude Scenes Are Needed for Cassie’s Story, ‘We All Get Naked in Real Life’
Euphoria has gotten heat for some nude scenes in the past. Sydney Sweeney addressed why nude scenes are necessary to tell Cassie Howard’s story.
There was a rumor some ‘Euphoria’ nude scenes were cut
Multiple Euphoria stars have filmed without clothes in the HBO show. But Sweeney revealed she spoke up about how some of the scenes were written with writer and director Sam Levinson.
“Sam [Levinson] is amazing,” she told The Independent. “There are moments where Cassie was supposed to be shirtless and I would tell Sam, ‘I don’t really think that’s necessary here.’ He was like, ‘OK, we don’t need it.’”
“I’ve never felt like Sam has pushed it on me or was trying to get a nude scene into an HBO show,” she continued. “When I didn’t want to do it, he didn’t make me.” Other outlets reported Sweeney got nude scenes cut from the show, and many fans started to show their support for her.
Sydney Sweeney says nude scenes are needed for Cassie’s story
Many fans became upset with Sweeney’s past comment, along with other stars who talked about refusing to do some nudity that was scripted for the show. But now the actor is setting the record straight.
“I never asked him to cut any scenes,” Sweeney clarified to Teen Vogue. “It got twisted and turned and it became its own beast, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God.’” The actor explained the meaning behind her telling that story was to show how respectful Levinson is to her as an actor.
Sweeney did explain why some of the nudity is needed for Cassie’s story. “I think it’s important to the storyline and the character,” she claimed. “There’s a purpose to what that character is going through. That’s the character. We all get naked in real life. We show this character’s life and what they’re going through. Cassie’s body is a different form of communication for her.”
Cassie’s affair was a big part of her season 2 story
Cassie’s character sometimes goes to great lengths to get attention from men. In the first season, she got pregnant by her boyfriend, Chris McKay (Algee Smith), then had an abortion.
The second season started with Cassie secretly hooking up with Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi). The rest of the season shows her spiraling over the guilt of betraying her best friend and trying to keep this secret. Cassie’s desire for men’s attention has led her to do more nudity than other characters.
Euphoria has been renewed for season 3. Fans will have to wait and see if Cassie will be communicating with others the same way or if she’ll change.
