‘Euphoria’: Sydney Sweeney Was ‘Completely Thrown off’ by Cassie’s Season 2 Turn
Euphoria fans were shocked by the premiere of season 2. That’s because Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney) had a new lover. Sweeney admitted she was also surprised by her character and explained her actions.

Cassie Howard chases Nate Jacobs in ‘Euphoria’ Season 2
Season 2’s premiere revealed Cassie and Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) have been sneakily hooking up. This is a shock since Nate dated Maddy Perez (Alexa Demie) last season, and Maddy and Cassie seemed to be best friends.
Throughout the season, Cassie defended her actions by saying Nate and Maddy are broken up. But things became weirder when Cassie started dressing like Maddy to win over Nate’s attention. Her guilt also started manifesting in different ways.
Rue Bennett (Zendaya) later told Maddy that Cassie and Nate were together. The season ended with Nate breaking up with Cassie after watching Lexi’s (Maude Apatow) play. Maddy beat up Cassie, then warned her that this is only the beginning of what it feels like to be Nate’s girlfriend.
Sydney Sweeney was ‘completely thrown off’ by Cassie’s betrayal
Many fans were shocked that Sydney hooked up with Nate and it sounds like Sweeney was too. “I am always excited to see what Sam does next,” Sweeney told Entertainment Weekly. “I mean, after season 1, I kept trying to imagine what Sam would write, and what was gonna happen to Cassie. I was like, ‘Well, Cassie has her sh*t together, so I don’t know what she’s gonna do after this.’”
“And then when I saw season 2 fall into place and come together, I was just completely thrown off because I thought Cassie had her sh*t together and now she doesn’t, and [it] was so much fun as an actor to be able to break down a character that was put up,” she continued. “And so I’m excited to see what happens for season 3.”
Sweeney did acknowledge that Cassie is bottling a lot of things up inside after season 1. She mentioned season 2 doesn’t happen long after Cassie had an abortion, and she still hasn’t talked about it with her friends.
Where will Cassie be in season 3?
Cassie certainly was desperate for Nate’s attention in season 2 by waking up early to do her hair and makeup. There was a scene of her also saying he could control her whole life.
It’s more likely she’ll be desperate to get Nate back next season. But it looks like Nate might be going through changes of his own. The season ended with him turning his father, Cal (Eric Dane) into the police. Time will tell if Nate and Cassie’s relationship will be back on next season.
