Ashanti has years of experience in the music industry under her belt. It’s no surprise, then, that the “Foolish” singer is creating a documentary about everything she’s faced in the past two decades.

Ashanti has been in the music industry for 2 decades

Ashanti first rose to recognition at the turn of the century. In 2002, she was featured on Fat Joe’s hit “What’s Luv?” and Ja Rule’s “Always on Time,” which both became some of the biggest songs of the year. They occupied the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart simultaneously, making her the first female artist to do so.

She released her debut single “Foolish” later that year. She captured the attention of the industry with a music video featuring future superstar actor Terrence Howard.

Ashanti has a documentary in the works

Ashanti was at the forefront of R&B in the early 2000s, which often overlapped with the world of hip-hop. She was a part of Irv Gotti’s Murder Inc. record label when she started out, and she went on to quickly learn the ins and outs of the industry.

Ashanti revealed in a 2021 interview with The Breakfast Club that her early days — both with Murder Inc. and otherwise — will be the subject of an upcoming documentary.

“I don’t talk about a lot. There have been a lot of things that have happened behind the scenes that forced me to grow,” she said honestly. “I am working on a documentary that’s going to — I don’t want to use the word ‘expose,’ but give a more transparent, deeper look into a lot of things.”

“I’m transparent; I talk to y’all, I’m not guarded,” she continued. “But there are just things that people don’t know, and that I haven’t spoken about in-depth and in detail.”

Ashanti is re-recording her debut album

One of Ashanti’s projects that she’s been working on is re-recording her 2002 self-titled debut album. Much like Taylor Swift, Ashanti didn’t have the rights to her masters and wasn’t receiving the money she deserved for her music. But she now has the opportunity to re-record the album, and is preparing to release a new version of the album in time for its 20th birthday in April 2022.

“With my album being 20 years old in April, obviously it made sense for me to go in and re-record so that I can collect my coins,” she said. “So it’s not necessarily changing the vibe, but injecting something new sonically into it.” She also teased that it might feature some guest appearances from big-name artists.

“You get the right to re-record,” she clarified. “Once I record that and that’s available, then that‘s what goes to all the streaming platforms and all of those residuals and that money comes to me.”
