These days everything Meghan Markle says, does, and wears gets a lot of attention. But she certainly wasn’t as well-known before she married into Britain’s most famous family. Back in 2015, when she was still starring in the legal drama Suits, she joined the set of Yahoo Style and was asked about her personal fashion and the key to a great outfit.

“I like to look polished and put together,” Meghan replied. “I think the most important thing you can do is tailoring — no matter what you have in your closet. You think that it’s not going to make a big impact but if it fits you to a T, you look a million times better. I learned that working on Suits. We literally do our fittings on the inhale — one, two, three, inhale, then get all the sizing right. When things are fitting you perfectly you’ll look fantastic.”

But it’s been argued that somewhere along the line, Meghan’s love for “tailoring” went out the window as she began wearing more clothing that’s loose and baggy on her. Now, a few experts are offering reasons why.

Expert says Meghan’s ‘ill-fitting’ outfits have to do with her image now

Stylist Caroline Holden, who used to dress Queen Camilla (formerly Camilla Parker Bowles), spoke to Express about the Duchess of Sussex’s wardrobe since she stepped down as a working royal and believes that her biggest faux pas is allowing “her clothes to do the talking.”

Holden told the publication: “Meghan tends to allow her clothes to do the talking and not her figure. There’s not even a touch of sparkle. She should dress to her body size and shape and show off her style rather than allowing the outfits to dominate her. Most of the items she wears are extremely ill-fitting and baggy, and she could benefit from the use of a good stylist.”

Fashion expert Giorgina Ramazzotti claimed that Meghan’s problem may be because she’s seen as a “controversial” figure and therefore, major fashion houses aren’t lining up to dress her.

According to Ramazzotti, “It can be noted that Meghan rarely wears big designer brands such as the French fashion houses Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Saint Laurent etc. These brands are very careful with their image and getting loans from them for lesser or controversial stars (as Meghan, in some circles, now is) is like getting blood from a stone.”

Celebrity stylist offers a different take and believes the loose fits may be intentional

Perhaps the most important dress Meghan has ever worn was her wedding gown when she married Prince Harry, but royal watchers were split on what they thought of it because of the loose fit. It was later revealed that the dress was intentionally constructed to be a little roomy so that the bride could move freely, as its thick material was constricting.

Celebrity stylist, Rochelle White explained to the Daily Mail that she believes some of the duchess’s other outfits are made with heavier material as well and are supposed to be bigger on her. And if she did work with even a small fashion house or lesser-known designer, she may not be able to make alterations.

“I know that wide-leg long trousers are in fashion and trend piece right now. They have been dominating Instagram and runways, so I think [Meghan] likes the style,” White explained, adding, “But the duchess could also be working with either a designer, fashion house, or stylist where it might not be possible to have alterations done so that they are more fitting to her leg length. So, as a result, they are longer.”
