‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’: Anthony Mackie Tried to Convince Marvel to Give Him a Love Story With [SPOILER] ‘Several Times’
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the latest Marvel series to drop on Disney+. It picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, and puts Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) at the center of the story.
The new series will give fans their first chance to dive deep into these characters and find out more about their backstory. But it won’t include the love story that Mackie tried to convince Marvel “several times” to give his character.
Don’t ask the stars of ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ about Easter eggs
While a number of Marvel fans have made it a hobby to look for all of the Easter eggs included in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, neither Mackie nor Stan think about them at all.
According to The Direct, Mackie and Stan were asked during a recent interview on The Jess Cagle Show about the episode one reveal that the Avengers didn’t make any money. The interviewer wanted to know if it was a surprise to them, but they said that it wasn’t something they think about.
“Not really. Nothing about the internet surprises me anymore,” Mackie said. “There’s stuff that people find interesting, and I just learned what an Easter egg is, so it’s a whole bunch of things going on that aren’t surprising at all.”
It’s not a conversation they have
Mackie continued his comment by insisting that he just learned what an Easter egg was. He explained that they don’t go around saying, “Yo, you saw that Easter egg in scene 12?” He says that’s just not a conversation that actors have.
“I think what [Mackie’s] trying to say is we try not to think as much about it as you think we do,” Stan added. “It’s a very strange thing, but we are actually not these characters.”

Mackie may not care about Easter eggs, but he does care about his character’s storyline. While speaking to The Toronto Sun, Mackie admitted that he’s requested a love story with Black Widow Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) “several times.”
He says the actors, like the fans, don’t ever have an idea about where the story is going. So, it’s just as exciting for them to see what happens.
“Every cliffhanger is a cliffhanger for everybody, except Kevin (Feige),” Mackie said. “But the question I always ask is: Do I fall in love with the Black Widow? When does that storyline come in? Because I’ve requested that several times.”
The new Marvel series is going to ‘change the game’ in television entertainment
Mackie admits that the idea of getting his own Marvel show made him feel “complete fear and horror.” He says that no one wants to be the actor who messes up the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He also admitted that he didn’t think it would be possible for a TV show to match the cinematic quality established in Avengers: Endgame. But, he was pleasantly surprised.
“Just the scope and magnitude of that final sequence in Endgame, I didn’t think we’d be able to do that on television,” he told IndieWire. “What we’ve been able to do with this show is really gonna change the game as far as what we now expect of our level of television entertainment to be.”
‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ explores the new normal
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier picks up not long after half of the world’s population returned to Earth in Endgame. Mackie says the series will explore what the new normal is in the MCU after the blip.
The actor pointed out the similarities to what’s going on with the pandemic, and our new normal in a COVID world. It’s an interesting coincidence because the script was written in 2017 and they began production in 2019.
“It’s very smartly written,” he said. “They did a great job with conceptualizing our reality now into the show even though we didn’t even know it was our reality.”
