‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’: Anthony Mackie’s Son Cried Hysterically After Realizing His Dad Was Captain America
Marvel’s newest TV series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, has made its stars, Anthony Mackie and Seabstian Stan, household names. Even though the two have starred in numerous Marvel movies such as Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gave both actors an opportunity to showcase their talents as lead actors.
Mackie has spent the last several years playing the Falcon, one of the few Black superheroes in the Marvel cinematic universe. And although Mackie loves the attention he’s been getting from fans as of late, none of it compares to the approval of his son.
Believe it or not, when Mackie’s son realized that his dad was the new Captain America, he hysterically burst into tears.
Anthony Mackie’s son had a subdued response when he first found out his dad was Captain America
Mackie’s son first found out that his dad was Captain America while the two were watching Avengers: Endgame. Mackie recalled the moment during an interview with Vanity Fair.
According to Mackie, he son wasn’t moved when he first saw his dad in the film.
“The first time I saw the movie, I didn’t know how it was gonna play out,” Mackie said. “So the last scene in Avengers: Endgame, I’m at the theater with my son and the movie ends, and my son goes, ‘Dad?’ I’m like, ‘What’s up?’ He goes, ‘Are, are you, are you Captain America?’ I said, ‘I think so.’ He goes, ‘Cool.’”
Mackie tried to hide his disappointment over his son’s lack of excitement, but he was clearly upset.
“I’m like, ‘That’s it?’ Like, that’s all I get!? ‘You should be—fine, cool, cool. You don’t cry, I don’t cry. I’m not gonna cry.’ …” Mackie said.
He cried hysterically after the news sunk in
Even though Mackie’s son played it cool at first, he called his dad a week later after the news had sunk in.
“So all night we’re hanging out, they get tired, take him home, put him to bed,” Mackie said. “A week later he calls me, bawling. And he’s like, ‘Dad, you’re Captain America.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, dude.’”
Unable to hide his excitement, Mackie’s son burst into tears while congratulating him.
“So he’s like, ‘I just, I didn’t know. That’s so amazing. I’m so proud of you,’” Mackie recalled. “So then I start crying. And I’m like, ‘You’re proud of me?’ He’s like, ‘I’m proud.’ I’m like, ‘I’m proud of you, buddy!’ [wails] [laughs]”

Later in the interview, Mackie admitted that one of the biggest perks of working on Marvel films is that they allow him to spend more time with his children.
“It’s funny, as a parent you do so much, and all you want is the approval of your kids,” Mackie said. “Like, nobody else matters. I don’t care what anybody else on the internet says. My son said it was cool, so it’s cool, you know? And that’s been the biggest thing with Marvel, and all of these movies. You realize it’s an opportunity for you to spend time with your kids. …”
Nobody knows what’s next for Mackie in the MCU, but it’s safe to say that fans will be seeing more of him.
