Families of the Mafia, MTV’s latest mob-related series, has come to an end. Many fans are wondering if Karen Gravano, her daughter Karina Seabrook, and the other mafia-tied families will return for another season of the show.

Here’s what we know about the possibility of Families of the Mafia Season 2.

‘Families of the Mafia’ was formerly ‘Made in Staten Island’

In January 2019, MTV briefly ran a series called Made in Staten Island. Due to the outrage exhibited by Staten Island natives, the series only ran for three episodes. Made in Staten Island also followed the children born into notorious mafia families, including Gravano’s daughter.

The community of Staten Island started a petition to have the show canceled, claiming the series misrepresented Staten Island as “a cesspool of gangsters, meatheads and low lives.” If MTV didn’t want to cancel the series altogether, petitioners wanted Staten Island removed from the title of the show.

Made in Staten Island disappeared from television screens, but Gravano said they were working behind the scenes. “We weren’t canceled,” she told The Wiseguyz Show podcast in April 2019. “We just had a couple of things come up and felt we wanted to add more layers to the show so we’re still working on it. We’ll definitely be back.”

Gravano wasn’t lying. The show returned with a new name in April 2020. MTV ran Families of the Mafia for six episodes. Like Made in Staten Island, the renamed series following four Staten Island families with connections to the mafia.

Why was ‘Families of the Mafia’ only six episodes?

Season 1 of Families of the Mafia was filmed sometime after Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano was released from prison in 2017. The series debuted on April 9, 2020 and will conclude after the sixth episode.

It’s unclear why the series was only six episodes. Considering the issues Gravano and company have experienced in the past creating a show that centers around Staten Island, it could be that the community is once again upset.

Will ‘Families of the Mafia’ return for Season 2?

MTV has yet to confirm another season of Families of the Mafia. With many shows delayed because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, even if the show did get renewed, crews wouldn’t be able to start shooting until it was safe.

What’s more, Families of the Mafia is currently in a legal battle with Spyglass Media Group (formerly the Weinstein Company). Spyglass owns Mob Wives, a VH1 show that featured themes, players, and content similar to Families of the Mafia. MTV recently received a cease-and-desist letter addressing the issue of copyright infringement.

Regardless of whether or not another season of Families of the Mafia is in the works, Gravano has other plans. According to her Twitter, she and her infamous father are working on a podcast together called Our Thing, where they’ll discuss the mafioso’s life story.
