Fans Convinced They Caught ‘Shang-Chi’ Star Posting in Controversial Reddit Thread
Simu Liu has been everywhere since the debut of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and fans still can’t get enough. The Marvel Cinematic Universe newcomer has been making headlines promoting the MCU’s latest project. Appearing on shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon have certainly boosted his profile, allowing fans to get to know the star. But there’s a segment of fans online that believe they’ve found Liu’s old Reddit account, and his resurfaced posts might have caused a division among his fan base.
The rise of Simu Liu
Simu Liu has come a long way as an actor. He worked his way up to superstardom by taking many jobs as an extra and stunt performer. His credits include Nikita, Pacific Rim, and working as a stunt double for Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz. Liu’s perseverance as an actor led to him accepting a starring role as Jung in Kim’s Convenience, which caused his popularity to skyrocket.
After several auditions, eventually Liu was able to nab himself the part of Marvel superhero Shang-Chi. It’s a mantle that he takes seriously due to the representation it can inspire.
“A superhero represents infinite possibility. It represents the peak of aspiration and courage,” Liu said in an interview with The Washington Post. “And if you see yourself reflected as a superhero, you will give yourself permission to dream anything. I deeply believe that every single community deserves to feel that.”
Fans everywhere have taken a liking to Liu because of his charm, attitude, and personality. All three of which have been on full display on late-night interviews and social media. But recently, the Reddit account some fans believe is Liu’s has caused some fans to turn away from the actor.
Alleged Simu Liu reddit account posts controversial comments
Internet sleuths are convinced that an anonymous Reddit user was Simu Liu. The account has posted some provocative statements in the past that have already caused fans to view the actor under a different spotlight. Some posts have the anonymous Reddit user comparing being gay to pedophilia.
“From a biological standpoint it’s no different than being gay – a small mutation in the genome that defines our sexual preference,” the account posted on pedophilia. “Depending on what area of the world you were born and what time, it also may have been a perfectly acceptable thing to act on those urges.”
The Reddit account also offered a quick statement about gender equality that some also took offense to.
“I am all about gender equality however girls are just not as good as boys at sports and whenever I play volleyball with a girl on the team I always get frustrated. Sometimes I say things. Back me up here fellas. It’s just different.”
Although there’s still some speculation, fans have done their due diligence in trying to verify Liu’s account. A Twitter user linked the account to a Reddit AMA Liu had done a while back.
“He would’ve been verified by the mods of that subreddit to post the thread.”
The Redditor in question made many posts and threads on Kim’s Convenience, which the poster claimed to star in.
Fans divisive over Simu Liu’s alleged comments
A portion of fans has expressed concern over Liu’s purported Reddit post history.
“i’m actually disgusted,” one Twitter user wrote.
“There’s even more. Simu is pretty awful all around,”
But for as many people who are against Liu’s alleged comments, there’s a contingent of supporters who see nothing wrong or offensive with his posts.
“People are reading his comment the wrong way. Can we control what we’re attracted to? Feet? Jawline? Asians? Same-Sex?”
“But what I can’t find is a single comment where he hates on black women for existing, or a comment hating women in general for not doing Asian men, or just any woman-hating, incel-related stuff in general.”
Many see a recent Simu Liu Twitter post as him expressing his feelings on the matter without confirming or denying the allegations.
Although Liu hasn’t defended himself, the young star may not need to. The support and backing he’s received from many fans may indicate the Shang-Chi star may have little to worry about.
