The Fast and Furious franchise has been a massive commercial success over the years. The last movie, F9 has so far earned a whopping $716.6 million in its global ticket sales. The movie came out in June 2021 to great fanfare. Moreover, its box office performance marked the return of theatrical releases, a rarity in the last two years due to the pandemic.

After the nine movies that spanned over 20 years and a spinoff, the Fast series is still going strong. But the end is in sight.

The ‘Fast and Furious’ saga will end with the ‘F11’

Yes, you read it right. The Fast and Furious main series only has two more movies to go. Universal Pictures announced earlier this year that the tenth movie of the series will release on April 7, 2023. The movie will begin production in January 2022.

Diesel, who plays the unfazed leader of the group: Dominic Toretto, had claimed in an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly that the tenth movie would be bigger than all the others.

“Just wait for 10,” Diesel said. “Let’s just say, the fact that you guys know that the studio is saying we can’t cover all this ground that needs to be covered in just one movie, you can only imagine what is to come.”

Justin Lin, the director of the upcoming two Fast movies, in a recent interview with Collider, echoed a similar sentiment but also took into consideration the reality of the present.

“There’s an ambition of what we want to do and there are also real-world issues that we’re encountering. But I feel like, for me, I don’t want to be greedy. I want to do what’s best for the process,” Lin said.

Both ‘F10’ and ‘F11’ will be shot back to back

Lin confirmed that the Fast and Furious team will shoot both the movies back to back. Both the movies, Lin said, will not be different stories. Through F10  and F11, Lin wants to tell one final chapter of the Fast series.

The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift director looked back at the time when he came on to direct one movie, without knowing if a sequel would happen.

“I have to say, I’m so glad because I think when I first entered this franchise, a sequel was not a given. You had to earn it,” Lin said. “And so to be sitting here and talking to you and go, ‘Oh yeah, there’s gonna be two more movies.’ I’m like, ‘Wow!’ It means a lot.”

With the mammoth task of filming both the films one after the other, Lin is trying to plan everything in a way that works out for the franchise.

“I’m trying to reconfigure and make sure hopefully whatever we’re talking about the process-wise is gonna yield the best result,” Lin said. “But having one chapter in two movies is correct. That’s where I sit today.”

What else do we know about the last two films?

So far, Universal Pictures hasn’t revealed the release date for the last film. Several of the Fast franchise members are expected to reprise their roles in the tenth movie.

Actors like John Cena, Jason Statham might be back for either or both of the movies too. In an Entertainment Weekly interview Sung Kang, who plays Han, gave a surprising hint. He suggested Gal Gadot might come back to the Fast movies. While her character died in the sixth movie, Kang teased, “All roads lead to Gisele.”

With many surprises awaiting the Fast and Furious fans in the last two movies, the wait for them is going to be long and hard.
