Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks are known for being members of the famous rock band Fleetwood Mac. They also dated before joining the group and broke up while still performing together.

Although it has been decades since they were romantically involved, Buckingham recently revealed that he never got closure from his relationship with Nicks. Here’s what the guitarist said and what his connection with Nicks is like now.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham have a complicated dating history

Buckingham and Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac on New Year’s Eve in 1974. The group had already seen several band members come and go, and they were looking for a new guitarist to replace Bob Welch.

Founding member Mick Fleetwood was impressed by Buckingham’s guitar playing on the track “Frozen Love” from the album Buckingham Nicks. He invited Buckingham to join the band, and the guitarist agreed on one condition: that his musical collaborator and girlfriend at the time, Stevie Nicks, join the group, too.

In the two years after Buckingham and Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac, the band made the albums Fleetwood Mac and Rumours. These two albums achieved massive success and catapulted the group to new heights of fame.

The ‘Fleetwood Mac’ singers are missing ‘closure’ after breaking up

Although Nicks and Buckingham made their music careers in Fleetwood Mac, their romance did not survive as long as their membership in the band. They had to continue working and performing together while navigating a messy breakup

In May 2021, Buckingham revealed in an interview with Nile Rodgers on his Apple Music 1 show “Deep Hidden Meaning Radio with Nile Rodgers” that he never truly got closure with the “Dreams” singer

“That was part of the deal with Stevie and me was that we had to spend an awful lot of time together without ever having gotten closure from each other,” Buckingham said (via Montana Standard).

“Most people, when they break up, they don’t see each other again for a long time or maybe ever again. But you’re not constantly having to not only see someone but, in my case, make the choice to do right for someone when I didn’t always feel that I wanted to, you know?”

Do Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham still speak to each other?

Buckingham was fired from Fleetwood Mac in 2018, and the guitarist has implied on several occasions that Nicks was responsible. He believes she gave an ultimatum to the rest of the band; they either had to fire the “Go Your Own Way” singer, or she would leave the group. Nicks has vehemently denied issuing an ultimatum but has said she could not continue working with Buckingham.

The year after Buckingham was fired from the band, he had a heart attack that required triple-bypass surgery. He told the LA Times in September 2021 that Nicks contacted him after the surgery and that he had texted and emailed her a few times since, but she doesn’t usually respond.

“She’s very guarded and protective of her own world, and I think she sees me as a potential upsetter of that,” he said of Nicks.

But Buckingham has stayed in touch with other members of the band, particularly Mick Fleetwood. “He’s talked about getting us back together,” said Buckingham. “But that’s him, and he probably didn’t want to see me go in the first place. I know he didn’t. But there’s a difference between him saying that and Stevie saying that.”
