A Fleetwood Mac Producer Said Stevie Nicks’ ‘Friends’ Took Control of Her Life
Stevie Nicks said she rarely brought boyfriends around the rest of Fleetwood Mac, but she nearly always had a group of women around. A Fleetwood Mac producer said that as Nicks’ fame increased, these friends slowly choked off her communication with others. He shared that it reached a point where he wasn’t able to get into contact with Nicks at all.
Stevie Nicks always had a group of friends with her
After Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham’s bitter breakup, she surrounded herself with a tight-knit group of women.
“My first impression of touring with Fleetwood Mac was seeing Stevie and her acolytes,” Kenny Loggins said, per the book Stevie Nicks: Visions, Dreams, and Rumours by Zoë Howe. “She seemed to collect talented, young, beautiful girls who would then dress like her and follow her around all the time.”
The women were alike in many ways.
“Stevie’s girls — Robin Snyder, Mary Torrey, Christie Alsbury, and others — dressed like Stevie, in long skirts and long hair with lots of accessories and drop-dead shades,” Stephen Davis wrote in the book Gold Dust Woman: The Biography of Stevie Nicks. “They smelled like her, too, redolent of patchouli oil and sandalwood.”
A producer said they cut off communication to the singer
Nicks liked to have the group with her, but Fleetwood Mac producer Ken Caillat said they began to control many aspects of her life.
“Stevie was a sweet, talented singer whose friends loved to support her,” he wrote in the book Making Rumours: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album. “In the future, Stevie would have more and more ‘friends’ around her. They would take control of all of her appointments, and we wouldn’t be able to reach her when we needed to. Finally, we wouldn’t be able to reach her at all. At this point, though, she was still the lovable, sweet Stevie.”
Though Caillat worked closely with Nicks for years, he eventually had no way of reaching her.
“I don’t have any way of connecting with Stevie,” he told Smashing Interviews. “Stevie’s got a big entourage of people that are paid to protect her from strangers, and I would be considered a stranger in their eyes.”
Stevie Nicks said she likes having a circle of close friends
Caillat has a negative view of Nicks’ relationship with these friends. Despite this, she said that she appreciates their companionship.
“I’m single, I don’t have children, and I’ve never been married except for three months a long time ago,” she told The New York Times. “And that doesn’t matter; It wasn’t a marriage of reality. I live a single woman’s life and yes, I spend a lot of time by myself. I have a few very close friends, most of them I’ve known forever, and I kind of like it.”
With her friends in her life, Nicks doesn’t feel that she needs a romantic relationship in order to feel fulfilled.
