Prince Harry and Meghan Markle met back in 2016, and while the two did their best to keep the relationship a secret at first, it eventually became known that the prince was dating an American actress. Meghan was the star of USA Network’s Suits at the time, and she had been born and raised in the United States.

After spending less than two years as working royals, Harry and Meghan moved to the US in 2020. And while there have been rumors over the years that they would eventually relocate to the United Kingdom once more, one former royal staffer says the duchess is just too “American” to do that.

Meghan Markle is too ‘American’ to live in the UK, expert claims

Harry and Meghan certainly grew up with different lives. Meghan was raised in sunny California, where she was the only child of Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland. She attended Northwestern University and pursued a career in acting, which was ultimately successful with her Suits role. Harry, on the other hand, was raised in the spotlight from a young age, where he was the son of the future king; he served time in the military, then honored his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, by performing his royal duties.

When Harry and Meghan met, people were quick to criticize their relationship, but eight years later, the two are still going strong with two children of their own. Although there have been rumors that Harry and Meghan might eventually make a UK comeback, one former butler put them to rest.

“I just think Meghan’s too much of an American girl,” former royal butler Grant Harrold told Slingo, via Express. “She doesn’t want to be in the UK permanently.”

Harrold continued, “I can see her coming over for the holidays and having time over here, but living here permanently? I just don’t see it.” Harrold also added that Harry returning home permanently is “highly unlikely” but still possible.

Prince Harry has said he loves living in the United States

While there could be certain things Harry misses about his home country, he does seem content living in the US. During a conversation at the New York Times’ DealBook Summit, Harry expressed how grateful he is that he can do so much with his children in the US that he “undoubtedly wouldn’t be able to do in the UK.”

Harry has also spoken about the lack of security for his family in the UK, so it seems that the only way he could ever return permanently would be if he and Meghan rejoined the family as working royals. Otherwise, Harry says they do not have the access to security that they need to feel safe.
