‘Freaky Friday’ Sequel ‘Freakier Friday’ Will Be ‘More Emotional,’ Lindsay Lohan Teases
Disney is revealing more details about its highly anticipated Freaky Friday sequel.
Original stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are reuniting for the upcoming follow-up to the 2003 movie. Both were in attendance at D23, Disney’s biennial fan event, on August 9. There, they opened up about what to expect from the next chapter of the body-swapping comedy.
‘Freaky Friday’ sequel gets title, ‘Freakier Friday’
Freaky Friday follows teenager Anna Coleman (Lohan) and her mom, Tess (Curtis), who wake up one morning in the other’s body. The strange switcheroo leads the at-odds duo to a better understanding of the other’s situation.
The sequel, which will be titled Freakier Friday, will pick up years later with older versions of Anna and Tess. “Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter,” reads Disney’s synopsis of the upcoming movie. “As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.”
In addition to Lohan and Curtis, the new movie will feature several other original cast members, including Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. Manny Jacinto will play Lohan’s husband.
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis tease what to expect from ‘Freakier Friday’
On stage at D23, Lohan and Curtis teased what fans can expect from Freakier Friday.
“It’s more fun; it’s more emotional, and it’s all for you guys,” Lohan said. “Seriously, the only reason we are back here doing this is because of your love. That is why.”
“It feels like picking up where we left off, which is really beautiful,” Curtis added.
While Lohan’s character is married in the new movie, it’s not to her teenage sweetheart, Jake (Murray). However, Jake will definitely make an appearance.
“Chad is in it. And boy, oh boy, is Chad in it,” Curtis said (via Deadline).
Production on Freakier Friday got underway this summer in LA. In an interview with ET, Curtis said it didn’t take long for her and Lohan to fall back into their old rhythm.
“The first day, we did both,” she said. “We were Tess and Anna, and then we switched with who we switch with. So, on one hand, we were really cocky because we knew exactly what we were doing. And then the next minute, we were inhabiting other people, and it was like, ‘OK, I don’t know what I’m doing.’ But it was super fun.”
Freakier Friday is due for release in 2025.
