Freddie Prinze Jr. Thought He and Sarah Michelle Gellar Were Incompatible When They First Met: ‘We Were Night and Day’
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are among the Hollywood couples who are still together. Through other celebrity breakups and divorces, they remain constant. This is why it’s surprising to learn Prinze once thought he and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star had nothing in common.
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar met at work
Gellar and Prinze first met on the set of a horror movie. They starred in the cult classic, I Know What You Did Last Summer. When filming on the 1997 movie wrapped, the two stayed in touch while they moved on to new acting gigs.
Gellar went on to become the star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer which debuted in March 1997, seven months before the release of the horror flick. Meanwhile, Prinze continued to land acting roles. The two later reunited for I Still Know What You Did Last Summer in 1998.
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. started out as friends
Although they met on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer, Gellar and Prinze didn’t start dating until 2000. Being friends before getting romantically involved is what Prinze credits for their successful marriage.
“We were just friends. That’s one of the reasons I think our relationship has always been so good,” he told E! News.
He continued, saying they both already knew a lot about each other.
“She knew what kind of guy I was, what my morals were, what my priorities were, and vice versa,” Prinze said. “We already knew all the faults about the other person.”
Freddie Prinze Jr. didn’t think he and Sarah Michelle Gellar were alike at all
When Prinze and Gellar started getting to know each other on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer, they talked during long drives (the nearest major city was an hour from set).
Gellar didn’t have a driver’s license because she grew up in New York City. So, she’d get a ride with Prinze. As Prinze told UsWeekly, they “became friends” during car rides.
“We just would talk about life and stuff like that, and we had completely different philosophies on just about everything,” he said. “‘Cause she was a born and raised New Yorker and I was a born and raised L.A. kid, and we just looked at everything like night and day.”
Although they had differing opinions on just about everything, they complemented each other.
“We ended up being the perfect balance,” Prinze said of him and Gellar. “But it didn’t happen until years after and there was a solid foundation built.”
Today, the actors are parents to two children. And although Gellar and Prinze have been co-stars numerous times, it probably won’t happen again for a long time. They trade off acting jobs so one parent is always home with the kids.
