‘Friends’: David Schwimmer Addresses Whether Ross and Rachel Were on a Break
There is one on-going debate that every Friends fan has a strong opinion on. The debate in question is whether or not Ross and Rachel were on a break.
This controversial topic regarding Geller and Green is responsible for tearing the characters apart in the first place. Perhaps things would have been fine and dandy for the beloved Friends couple if they just got this one question straight: Were they on a break or not?
Schwimmer weighs in his thoughts on the pressing matter.
‘We were on a break’
The characters on Friends are just as passionate about this never-ending debate as fans of the series still are. While Ross is adamant about the fact that a break means a “break up,” Rachel thinks this is totally unreasonable. Jennifer Aniston’s character regards a “break” as very different from a “break up.”
So when Ross sleeps with another woman after he and Rachel establish a break, all hell breaks loose. Rachel regards the situation as Ross cheating on her, while Ross wholeheartedly disagrees. He comments on how a “break” means “break up” which could “last forever” for all he knows.
Despite Ross feeling extremely apologetic about the whole situation, (at least at first), the terminology of a “break” is ultimately what severs their ties as boyfriend and girlfriend.
Ross says the phrase “We were on a break!” so often, that Rachel suggests he put it on his answering machine. (Classic 90s line.) When he shouts “We were on a break!” for the millionth time, Chandler hilariously responds, “If you say that one more time, I’m gonna break up with you.”
David Schwimmer thinks they were on a break
In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Schwimmer discusses how Friends has changed his life. He confesses that he originally turned down the role because, after a bad experience, he never wanted to star on a sitcom again. Fallon then asks Schwimmer what fans shout at him the most when it comes to classic Ross Geller lines. He admits people shout “Pivot” at him, as well as “You were on a break!”
Schwimmer adds, “You know, people are so passionately divided about whether or not they were on a break.”
When Fallon asks where Schwimmer stands on the subject, he replies, “Yeah, it’s not even a question. They were on a break.”
To this, Fallon starts cracking up because the way Schwimmer says this is so certain. No part of him believes otherwise.
Jennifer Aniston reveals whether or not Ross and Rachel are still together
Clearly, Aniston’s success from her days on Friends refuses to fizzle in the slightest. In 2019, the Along Came Polly actress broke the Instagram record for the fastest person to gain 1 million followers. She even beat Prince Harry and Meghan Markle!
On an Instagram post uploaded to her account, Aniston posted a picture of a Friends reunion with the whole cast. Former-bachelorette, Kaitlyn Bristowe, commented on Aniston’s picture. She posed a question about Ross and Rachel’s status.
Bristowe asks, “Are you and Ross still together?”
To which Anniston replies, “We’re on a break.”
You can catch Schwimmer’s new sitcom Intelligence now, on Peacock.
