‘Friends’: What Is David Schwimmer’s Favorite Episode From the Sitcom?
Every Friends fan has a favorite episode (or two or three) of the show. All of the episodes over the show’s 10-season run are hilarious, but some just were more memorable to each of us, for different reasons, than others.
This is even true for the cast of the award-winning show. The 6 stars of the show (David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow) each have an episode of Friends that holds a special place in their hearts. Ross fans everywhere are dying to know: what was Schwimmer’s favorite Friends episode? This is The One Where we tell you the answer!
Schwimmer’s character on ‘Friends’
Schwimmer fabulously plays Ross Geller on Friends, a nerdy and lovable paleontologist who spends most of the series’ 10 seasons desperately in love with Rachel (played by Jennifer Aniston). His goofy quirks and dedication to those he loves make him an endearing character, not to mention his outrageously hilarious attitude and dilemmas that are impossible not to laugh at.
Friends was Schwimmer’s breakout role in acting, but since the show ended it seemed like he preferred to stay out of the Hollywood limelight. He famously voiced the hypochondriac giraffe, Melman, on the Madagascar animated film series, and more recently he’s returned to television starring as Robert Kardashian in the miniseries The People vs. O.J. Simpson.
He also recently starred in the 2019 Netflix movie Laundromat alongside Meryl Streep. Compared to some of his costars like Jennifer Aniston, for example, Schwimmer seems to have largely stepped back from the Hollywood life.
What is Schwimmer’s favorite ‘Friends’ episode?
Glamour magazine reported that in a special event to honor Friends director James Burrows, Schwimmer revealed that one of his favorite episodes was “The One With the Blackout.”
In this episode which aired in Friends‘ first season, Ross tries to confess his feelings to Rachel but a stray cat jumps on his back and he has a massive freakout.
Schwimmer shared at the time that Burrows had told him while they were filming the hilarious scene that he’d tell him to when it was time to stop acting like the stray cat was attacking him. However, according to Schwimmer, Burrows forgot to actually tell him to stop, which led to the outrageous freak-out that we see Ross having.
“I don’t know if I’d say it was my absolute favorite episode, but I loved doing “The One With the Blackout”. That was a memorable one, but there are so many,” Glamour quoted Schwimmer as saying at the time.
Fun fact: “The One With The Blackout” is also Courtney Cox’s favorite Friends episode. Cox plays Ross’ sister Monica on the show, so perhaps this speaks to a connection between the on-screen siblings.
Schwimmer has another favorite episode
“The One With the Blackout” isn’t the only Friends episode that stands out to Schwimmer as a favorite. He also named “The One With the Holiday Armadillo” as one of the most memorableepisodes he filmed.
Any Friends fan will remember this episode, in which Ross becomes obsessed with teaching his young son, Ben, about Hanukkah, because Ben has only learned about Christmas traditions thus far in his life.
Later on in the episode, Ross changes his mind and tries to rent a Santa suit to please Ben, but this close to Christmas, there are no Santa suits available. This leads Ross to rent an armadillo costume instead, and names it the “Holiday Armadillo”, who teaches Ben all about Hanukkah.
This episode was so special to Schwimmer that he shared with US Magazine that he’d like to be able to show it to his daughter, Cleo, someday. Schwimmer also has Jewish heritage, so it sounds like he’s hoping to use the Holiday Armadillo to teach Cleo about Hanukkah, too.
