‘Full House:’ Why Kimmy Getting Drunk and Trying To Drive Was So Traumatic for DJ Tanner
Although it was a comedy series, Full House touched on some serious topics, including driving under the influence. When Kimmy Gibbler got drunk at a frat party, DJ Tanner kept a level head for more than one reason.
Here’s what we know about these characters from the original sitcom titled Full House.
DJ Tanner’s mom was killed by a drunk driver
The Tanner house is full of love in this series but one thing noticeably missing is Danny Tanner’s wife, Pam. Views learned that when Michelle Tanner was only six months old, her mother was killed because of a drunk driver.
In need of help raising his three daughters, Danny Tanner asked his two best friends to move into the house. Jesse and Joey only planned to stay for a few months but after spending time with Michelle, Stephanie, and DJ, this family grew up together.
DJ Tanner went from being a bright elementary school student to a headstrong high schooler in charge of the school’s newspaper. Through it all, she had the support of her best friend and next-door neighbor, Kimmy Gibbler.
Kimmy tried to drive drunk during the ‘Under the Influence’ episode of ‘Full House’
When Kimmy and DJ were still in high school, the duo decided to go to their first frat party together. During the season 8 episode, DJ stayed sober while talking to the boys there, but Kimmy went completely overboard.
Things got even worse when DJ wanted to leave and Kimmy insisted on driving them home. DJ wouldn’t let her best friend drive under the influence, so she took the keys out of her hand and took her back to sleep at the Tanner house. The next morning, Kimmy was upset that DJ was babying her at the party and stormed out of DJ’s room.
DJ told Kimmy what actually happened at the party
Eventually, DJ caught up with Kimmy outside, who couldn’t even make it back to her house because she was so hungover. It’s her life, Kimmy told her friend. Why does DJ care whether or not she drives drunk or has a good time at the party?
“I’m sorry, I do care. My mom died because of a drunk driver,” DJ explained to Kimmy. “I wasn’t gonna lose my best friend the same way.”
The girls made up once Kimmy understood why DJ was so upset. Once they were both over 21 on the Netflix spinoff series Fuller House, the two did drink together, as did Stephanie, the middle child of the Tanner sisters.
Most episodes of Full House featuring the character DJ Tanner are available for streaming on Hulu. All five seasons of the Netflix original spinoff series, Fuller House, are available on the streaming platform, Netflix.
