Candace Cameron Bure Sparks Controversy With Instagram Post About Vaccines
Candace Cameron Bure stirred up debate on social media with her recent post about vaccines. The Fuller House actor’s post asserting she was not anti-vaccine, but pro-medical freedom attracted tens of thousands of comments. Some people praised her for speaking out against COVID-19 vaccine mandates, but others slammed her for what they saw as a hypocritical and anti-science stance.
Candace Cameron Bure claims she is ‘standing up for freedom’
On Oct. 7, Bure took to Instagram to repost a series of images from the Instagram account @thegirlnamedblake. The graphics featured statements such as “I’m not anti-v, I’m just pro-immune system” and “I’m not anti-v, I’m just pro-medical freedom.”
“This. This is not about what I am against. This is what I am FOR. Read and understand the distinction,” she wrote in the caption. “This mama is holding the line and standing up for freedom. This should not separate us. We can have different opinions and still respect and love one another. Be bigger than that!”
This isn’t the first time the Hallmark Channel actor has shared her opinion on vaccines. In September, she spoke out against vaccine mandates in a now-deleted Instagram Story (via Heavy). She also declined to share her vaccination status.
The ‘Full House’ star had support from some of her celebrity followers
Bure’s comments resonated with many of her followers, including several well-known personalities. Actors Carlos and Alexa PenaVega both responded positively. “LOVE. SUPPORT. LET’S GO,” Carlos commented.
Danica McKellar, who, like Bure, has appeared in many Hallmark movies, also voiced her support, replying with a series of clapping hands emojis. Cheryl Burke of Dancing With the Stars replied with two hearts.
Many others who follow Bure thanked her for sharing her stance and speaking out against vaccines, with one person telling her she was standing “on the right side of history.”
Others call out the Candace Cameron Bure for her anti-vax comments
While there were many who shared Bure’s skeptical stance toward vaccine mandates, plenty of people were quick to express their disappointment in the actor’s position.
One called out one of the slides Bure shared, which read: “I’m not anti-v, I’m just pro-sunlight, exercise, real food & vitamins.”
“So those who died just didn’t eat healthy enough and stand in sunshine?” the person commented.
Others called out Bure for trumpeting the importance of medical choice while also holding anti-choice views when it comes to abortion. Bure talked about her views on abortion during her time on The View, telling co-host Whoopi Goldberg that unborn children had “no voice” (via The Wrap).
“If you are pro medical freedom, can you also be anti abortion? It seems hypocritical to demand bodily autonomy while denying other girls and women their bodily autonomy in the same breath,” one person commented on Bure’s social media post.
A number of people who said they’d lost loved ones to COVID-19 urged Bure to rethink her stance. And several said they’d look to medical professionals for advice on vaccines, not celebrities.
“I’m for… talking to my Doctor and getting advice from him. No one else,” one wrote.
