Gabrielle Union Once Named What She and Her Husband Dwyane Wade Did That Wasn’t ‘Good for my Ego’
Gabrielle Union has admitted she can be quite competitive when it comes to certain activities with her husband Dwyane Wade. Which was why when she faced Wade in this one contest, she admitted it didn’t take long for things to get ugly.
Gabrielle Union found out doing this with Dwyane Wade wasn’t good for her
Union’s superstar husband Wade wasn’t the only savvy sports athlete in the family. Speaking with ESPN, Union asserted that she was something of an athlete herself. She enjoyed playing a variety of sports during her childhood years, which was something that ran in the family.
“I’ve been a Cornhusker fan since birth, my dad is a huge sports fan — he wanted boys and got three girls — so sports has always been on in my house. I’ve always had an interest in sports across the board,” Union said.
In a lot of ways, it seemed that her passion for sports rivaled her passion for acting.
“In my family if you couldn’t talk Cornhusker football — that means knowing the black shirt defense, knowing the I-back formation — then you don’t get to have an opinion,” she said. “When I first toured the Nebraska campus and I saw Turner Gill walk, I freaked out. That was like the biggest star-struck moment I’ve probably ever had in my life. But it’s because I grew up in a household that always talked specifically Cornhusker football and Big 8 sports, at the time.”
And although she didn’t play professionally, the Being Mary Jane star shared Wade’s love for Basketball as well.
“I probably started as a four, and then very quickly demonstrated my ball-handling prowess, so I was probably point guard from, like, seven or eight on playing competitive basketball. I played sports year around: basketball, soccer, softball and I ran track year around, from the time I was, like, six, seven,” she said.
But if there was one thing that probably wasn’t a good idea for the actor, it was challenging Wade in a game of Basketball. However, that didn’t stop the Bring It On star from doing so, much to her own detriment.
“And it’s not pretty,” she said.
“For me. Not good for my ego. During the lockout we played a lot of HORSE, and I just try to sit at the free throw line and I’m like, ‘He’s gonna screw up at one point or another.’ I was, in high school, a career 93-percent free-throw shooter. So I feel like if I just stay at the free-throw line I have a solid chance. I think I’ve got it into H-O-R. That’s as far as I’ve ever come,” she added.
Gabrielle Union revealed that she and husband Dwyane Wade are sports parents
Union and Wade’s passion for sports and competition also seems to affect their parenting. She confided that, when watching their kids play sports, they can probably be more competitive than their children are on the field.
“When your child decides they aren’t going to give their full effort, you have to understand, me and Dwyane lose our minds,” she once said on The Steve Harvey Show. “We start off like, we’re just going to sit here [and] we’re not going to draw any attention to ourselves, this is really about the kids and then it turns into The Shining–‘what is happening?!’”
It would come to the point where Union and Wade would even coach their kids’ games to better help them win.
“You’re like I gave up what little bit of sleep I had and you’re not going to get on defense?!,” she said. We’re those parent’s who give like halftime lectures in the middle of the game. We’re those people!”
