Game of Thrones ended its run three years ago. And now, House of the Dragon will be the first spinoff to make it to HBO. But could it also be the last? Fans who were hoping for more spinoffs and prequels after House of the Dragon might be disappointed by the latest update from HBO programming VP Kara Buckley.

How many ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoffs are in the works?

When Game of Thrones became a global phenomenon a decade ago, it seemed to be a sure thing that HBO would attempt to capitalize on that success by expanding the GoT TV universe. But when creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss ended the series with such a divisive season 8, the future of that universe became not so certain.

The first planned prequel series starring Naomi Watts was set 10,000 years before the events of the original show, but HBO opted not to pick it up. Next in line was House of the Dragon, which did get a 10-episode order. And there are still reportedly more series in development.

According to author George R. R. Martin, a project once known as Nine Voyages is now called The Sea Snake. It will reportedly focus on Corlys Velaryon, a character played by Steve Toussaint in House of the Dragon.

There’s also Ten Thousand Ships, a story following a character named Princess Nymeria, an ancestor of House Martell. It is reportedly set 1,000 years before Game of Thrones. The Tales of Dunk and Egg series is also in the works, which will be “a faithful adaptation” to the novellas.

“The first season will be an adaptation of the first novella, The Hedge Knight,” Martin said, per Entertainment Weekly.

The latest HBO update might be disappointing for fans hoping for more spinoffs and prequels

Martin has told his fans that he’s “not allowed” to talk about most of what’s happening with the series in development at HBO. But he seems a lot more optimistic about more spinoffs and prequels than HBO programming VP Kara Buckley.

At the recent ATX Television Festival in Texas, Buckley discussed the future of the GoT TV universe during a panel named “Futurescape: A Look at What’s Ahead.” She did confirm that “a lot of ideas” had been developed, but anything beyond House of the Dragon isn’t a guarantee.

“We developed a lot of ideas, we were still developing a lot of ideas, and I think we’re really excited about the one that will air later this summer,” Buckley said, per The Sun. “But we don’t feel the need to make another one unless it feels really creatively exciting to us.”

The ‘Game of Thrones’ creators aren’t involved

After the end of Game of Thrones, Weiss and Benioff moved on from HBO and signed a deal with Netflix. So, they aren’t involved with House of the Dragon or any of the other spinoffs and prequels in development.

Martin is involved as an executive producer, as House of the Dragon is based on his 2018 novel Fire & Blood. The author has also seen concept art for other projects, and he says things are “moving very fast.” However, it remains to be seen if any of those shows in development will actually make it to air.

House of the Dragon premieres Sunday, August 21 on HBO.
