‘General Hospital’ Actors Dominate Daytime Emmy Nominees
The 2020 Daytime Emmy Awards will air on June 26 on CBS. One of the top soap operas recognized is General Hospital, with its many long-running actors. Not only is the show watched by millions of viewers, but it has also been the recipient of various awards over the years. And it’s not hard to see why with its intricate storylines and well-developed characters. To understand why General Hospital has dominated awards shows, you first need to know the history of the show.
A brief history of ‘General Hospital’
General Hospital is the longest-running soap opera on daytime television. The title is meant to show the anonymity of the hospital and fictional town, which was identified during the 1970s as being Port Charles. Today, the show focuses largely on crime.
One of the most well-known daytime soap couples is General Hospital‘s Luke and Laura, whose wedding was viewed by 30 million fans. General Hospital also has had high-profile celebrities for guest stars, such as Elizabeth Taylor and Roseanne Barr. The 14,000th episode aired in February 2018. And in April 2013, the show had its 50th anniversary.
After its 1963 premiere, it has proven to be the longest-running Hollywood-produced serial. It is also the longest-running show in ABC history. And it holds the record for the most Daytime Emmy Awards for outstanding drama series at 13 wins.
Changes at the Daytime Emmy Awards
The Daytime Emmy Awards began in 1974 for the recognition of outstanding achievement in daytime television, according to the Emmys website. Typically, the awards are presented based on over 2,700 submissions where a panel of television industry peers using confidential ballots selects the nominees.
The June 26 airing on CBS will mark the 14th time that CBS has broadcast the show. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, some recipients and guests will appear from home to maintain social distancing.
