‘General Hospital’: Did Vanessa Marcil Just Tease the Return of Brenda Barrett?
As the times have changed, fans of daytime soap operas have found themselves with a lot fewer options. Yet, General Hospital continues to persist more than 50 years after its debut. With such a rich history to draw upon, the show rarely shies away from the chance to revisit the past.
This is especially the case when a particular couple starts to overstay its welcome. And as the fandom for Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly (Laura Wright) subsides, Sonny’s original love interest might be about to sweep back into Port Charles very soon.
Vanessa Marcil debuted on ‘General Hospital’ in 1992
When Benard joined the show as mobster Sonny Corinthos in 1993, he caught the attention of Brenda Barrett (Vanessa Marcil). And for a long while, their on-again/off-again relationship was one of the most popular on the show. Then Marcil left the show in 1998 amid Brenda’s mysterious disappearance.
Since then, Marcil has reprised the role a few times, including short 2002-2003 and 2010-2011 runs. Most recently, Brenda showed up briefly in 2013. For the most part, she’s most famously been romantically linked to either Sonny or Jax (Ingo Rademacher). With Rademacher back on the show since 2019, the stage is set for Brenda to check in to GH.
Brenda Barrett could be coming back to the show very soon
Marcil previously said she would absolutely return to the show if the day ever came that GH would be canceled. Thankfully for fans, the show doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. Yet, Brenda’s return could be imminent, according to Marcil herself.
In response to a fan, the actor recently teased her return to the role. The fan took to Twitter to express love for Benard’s Sonny but had nothing nice to say about Brenda. Marcil then chimed in, retweeting the scathing message with her own sly response: “I’ve got some bad news for ya.”
Marcil has long been considered a core part of the GH family, even when she spends years away from the show. In fact, GH has seemingly gone out of its way to accommodate Marcil’s return, no matter how brief or sporadic it may be. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise for Brenda to pop up again.
Co-star Maurice Benard has shown his support for Marcil’s return
While nothing is official just yet, now does feel like a great time for the creative team behind GH to re-energize the show. Bringing back Marcil would ignite new interest in the soap. After all, it only recently resumed production after shutting down due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
For his part, Benard said he’s excited about Marcil’s possible comeback. The actor previously voiced his support for her and the ratings boost she brings. And he even replied to Marcil’s tweet, questioning why fans wouldn’t want her back. So stay tuned, GH fans, for a possible Sonny and Brenda reunion in the near future.
