‘General Hospital’: Kirsten Storms Reveals What Led to Her Brain Surgery
From Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century viewers to loyal fans of General Hospital, Kirsten Storms has touched a lot of lives. She has been candid with fans about her health and personal life over the years. She even opened up about having to take a break from General Hospital to deal with skin issues in the past. Now, she is being open once again and telling fans the details of her recent brain surgery.
Kirsten had been feeling bad for a while
On Sunday, Storms took to Instagram to share how she realized there was a problem.
“I spent the last few years having random health issues that I disregarded as side affects to my medications or just something I was experiencing due to age,” she wrote. “When I went to get an MRI for some severe neck pain I have been experiencing for the last few months (I assumed this neck pain was also causing my frequent ‘migraines’) my amazingly thorough orthopedist ordered an MRI of my head just to be on the “safe side” – even though that isn’t his area of expertise. Truly a great doctor.”
That’s when her doctor found a cyst.
“That’s when we stumbled upon a rather large, very full of fluid, cyst that was attached to the lower portion of brain,” she continued. “I feel very fortunate that my situation wasn’t more serious and that I had a wonderful neurosurgeon who immediately knew how to fix it.”
The ‘General Hospital’ cast helped her get through it
From finding out about the cyst to preparing for the surgery, Storms relied on her General Hospital costars for support.
“I’m not gonna lie, brain surgery had me nervous, but I’m immensely thankful to my family, friends, and incredible “work family” who have been supportive, kind and loving during a time when I’ve been feeling a lot of emotions,” she wrote. “Work is a great place to be everyday and for the 2 months leading up to my surgery I found a lot of comfort being around the people I’ve worked beside for so many years. I’m excited to get back to it after my recovery. (Yes, they shaved a portion of my head, so please no comments if you don’t like my hair. It’s temporary.) Again, thank you to everyone for sending positive vibes my way. It’s not gone unnoticed. ♥️”
She concluded her update with a light-hearted quip about gaining super powers from the procedure.
“Fun fact: I now firmly believe the new plates in my brain will give me some sort of special ability,” she closed. “Fingers crossed I can suddenly knit a sweater in 1 day. Ooo maybe 1 hour. “
Kirsten Storms’ past health issues
Storms has had to leave General Hospital a number of times to take care of herself. In 2011, she was diagnosed with endometriosis and had to leave to focus on her health. She returned in 2012 but left briefly in 2014 for maternity leave. In 2016, she took a break from the show to deal with breakouts that were due to stress.
“I am taking a little break from work due to some skin issues I’ve been having. My doctors say my breakouts are due to stress, but shouldn’t take too long to get under control. (I can say that I’m on the better end of it now),” she wrote on Twitter at the time. “However, it was becoming too difficult for ‘GH’ to coverup.”
Storms did return after the skin issue, however, she took another break from the show in 2017 to focus on her mental health.
