‘General Hospital’: Laura Wright Explains Why Fans Should Give Carly and Jason’s Marriage a Chance
General Hospital characters Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) and Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) recently decided to get together in a marriage of convenience. Carly’s mob boss husband, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), “died” earlier this year, so Carly and Jason (who is Sonny’s right-hand man) are now tying the knot for the sake of the mob.
Many fans on social media are not supportive of this storyline. However, Wright explained why they should give it a chance.
Many fans do not support Carly and Jason’s marriage
Carly and Jason’s marriage came just after Carly’s longtime, on-and-off husband was believed to be dead. Additionally, Jason was also gearing up for a romantic relationship with Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud). As such, many fans do not support Carly and Jason’s marriage.
“Jason and Carly getting married is wrong,” one person wrote in the comment section of SoapHub. “Their chemistry is them being BFF’s. Let them have the ideal friendship!”
Another person said, “She loved Sonny for many years, but now we’re to believe that Jason is the one she loves? When Sonny gets his memories back, he’s not gonna be happy that Carly did this.”
“I hope the writers don’t keep this Carly and Jason thing up for too long because I absolutely hate them together, even if it’s just for business,” another fan wrote.
In early August, executive producer Frank Valentini made a post on Twitter about Carly and Jason, which got a lot of negative responses from fans. Shortly afterward, Wright announced she would take a break from the social media platform, writing that “the negativity has beaten me down.”
Laura Wright explains why fans should give this pairing a chance
While many fans are against Carly and Jason’s marriage, Wright often insists that they give the pairing a chance, even if it seems to go against what they want at first.
“I just know soap operas. You had to throw a monkey wrench in it for now,” she said during an event at the Flappers Comedy Club in Burbank California, as recorded by the podcast That’s Awesome. “You guys know: how do we keep the show on for 57 years? By doing stuff like this that keeps us going. When you’re happy, you’re boring. You can say you’re not. I’ve been doing this for 30 years—yes, you are.”
Wright also addressed viewers who say they hit the fast-forward button when Carly and Jason’s scenes come up.
Wright explained, “When we FF, we miss the journey of being taken on something we thought we didn’t like, but we go, ‘Oh, that’s interesting.’ Luke and Laura would have never been the supercouple that they were if you had the FF button back then—or social media.”
Laura Wright and Steve Burton both enjoy this storyline
While not all fans want to watch Carly and Jason together, both Wright and Burton seem to be enjoying this storyline a lot.
For example, Wright told Michael Fairman TV that working with Burton is like “being in a great relationship.”
“It’s being in a great relationship that means that you get to be 100% you and everything that means, and that person loves and accepts you,” she said. “So, then you have full freedom to feel and play and do anything, and that’s kind of what you see. There’s just a confidence, and I think it is also the relationship. I think it has to be there when I work with Steve because the relationship between Carly and Jason is that way.”
Meanwhile, Burton told Soap Opera Digest, “I think it’s great! I’ve been having a blast. It’s all new stuff.”
