‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Fans Slam the Final Trailer’s Original Ghostbuster Reveal
Ghostbusters: Afterlife revives one of the most beloved film franchises of all time. It has a very loyal fandom that has followed all that it has to offer since the 1984 original movie. Hollywood is currently bringing back several franchises, but continuing the story rather than rebooting it entirely. Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife is doing just that to get fans back into movie theater seats. However, fans are angry with the final trailer’s spoilers.
‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is a direct sequel
Juno‘s Jason Reitman directed the Ghostbusters: Afterlife screenplay that he co-wrote with Monster House director Gil Kenan. The story follows the events from 1989’s Ghostbusters II. Set 30 years later, a single mother and her children move to a tiny town in Oklahoma. They soon discover that they have a secret connection to the original Ghostbusters. Their legacy is the key to their futures.
The cast includes Stranger Things‘ Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd. Ghostbusters: Afterlife also sees the return of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts. This sequel comes off the backlash from the 2016 reboot featuring an all-female Ghostbusters cast.
The final trailer is making fans angry
The official Ghostbusters YouTube page posted the final trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It introduces the story and showcases a ton of special effects. Several ghosts and iconic technology have substantial screentime. There are even some adorable miniature Stay Puft Marshmallow Men. There’s certainly an abundance of material packed into the final trailer.
Fans have taken to social media and Reddit to voice their opinions regarding the Ghostbusters: Afterlife trailer. Some simply noted their excitement to finally see the movie. The trailer’s biggest reveals have confirmed their interest in the movie. They’re now ecstatic to see what Ghostbusters: Afterlife has to offer. The nostalgic music at the end also instilled emotion that overcame some viewers. Some even claimed that it made them tear up.
However, the majority called Sony’s marketing department out for spoiling the movie. There’s a voice at the end of the trailer that says, “Have you missed us?” Redditors and Twitter users mentioned that the voice must be from a ghost version of Ghostbuster Egon Spengler. One Redditor even said, “When ghost Egon shows up, I’m demanding a refund.” Some of them explained how the main cast is what made the original Ghostbusters movies work. That lightning in a bottle is gone in a modern expansion on the story.
‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ already screened for press
Ghostbusters: Afterlife‘s release date suffered four coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic-related delays. The movie had a surprise screening during the 2021 CinemaCon event in Las Vegas. Critic reactions are generally positive, although some have criticized its heavy use of nostalgia. It heavily relies on these references to push its narrative and prioritizes fan service. However, Ghostbusters: Afterlife appears to be praised much more than the Melissa McCarthy-starring reboot.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife hits theaters on Nov. 19.
