Giada De Laurentiis’ Favorite Thanksgiving Turkey Sandwich Is ‘so Luscious You’ll Want to Make It Year-Round’
What’s Thanksgiving without leftovers? Namely, the humble turkey sandwich. Giada De Laurentiis’ turkey sandwich recipe takes the classic post-Thanksgiving dish to a new level. What’s more, the celebrity chef has said it’s so good the sandwich will probably remain on the menu long after the holidays are over.
Giada De Laurentiis’ turkey sandwich is a twist on the classic
Leave it to the Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef to put a decadent spin on the classic turkey sandwich. De Laurentiis’ Post-Thanksgiving Monte Cristo combines Thanksgiving leftovers — roast turkey and cranberry sauce — with kitchen staples.
De Laurentiis shared the recipe on her Giadzy blog, explaining why it’s a standout turkey sandwich.
An overstuffed turkey sandwich is as much a part of the post-Thanksgiving game plan as watching football on TV, but this one is so luscious you’ll want to make it year-round,” she said.
The Everyday Italian host continued, saying the combination of ingredients makes it anything but ordinary. “Cranberry sauce, mustard, and cheese keep the sliced breast moist, and a golden-brown egg batter elevates that old chestnut to showstopper status,” she said.
The Food Network star’s turkey sandwich is a 30-minute meal
De Laurentiis’ turkey sandwich recipe isn’t average which means it requires a little more time in the kitchen. How much time exactly? Approximately 30 minutes, according to the recipe instructions on Giadzy. However, Food Network says otherwise, listing 15 minutes as the total cook time.
Whether it takes 15 or 30 minutes to make, De Laurentiis’ turkey sandwich appears to be worth it based on the how-to video alone. In a 2016 tweet, the now-51-year-old called it “hands down my fav thxgiving turkey sandwich” and it’s easy to see why.
De Laurentiis gives cranberry sauce added flavor with the addition of mustard and rosemary. She takes it a step further by adding a few slices of cheese. After assembling the sandwich she coats it in an egg mixture and cooks it until the outside is golden brown. Following a light dusting of powdered sugar De Laurentiis’ turkey sandwich is ready to eat.
The key to a successful Thanksgiving dinner is balance, according to De Laurentiis
Before Thanksgiving leftovers can be transformed into De Laurentiis’ turkey sandwiches there has to be an elaborate dinner. The cookbook’s author tip? Aim to have balance.
“The key to a truly successful Thanksgiving spread is balance,” she told Food Network in 2015. “You have your savory turkey, decadent gravy and potatoes, tangy cranberry sauce, and a slightly sweet, moist cornbread on the table that creates that full-circle happy flavor combination on your plate.”
And when it comes to making an entire Thanksgiving dinner for the first time ever, De Laurentiis warns against it. “Do a potluck! Do not try to do it all yourself … get help! I think at the end of the day we have very little time in our lives,” she said. “And the more help we can get, the more successful we can be at home, the better.”
Whatever the plan is for Thanksgiving, be sure to make enough leftovers for De Laurentiis’ turkey sandwiches.
