For many Gilmore Girls fans, Luke Danes and Lorelai Gilmore were relationship goals. Their continued success as a couple in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is considered one of the highlights of the otherwise lackluster Netflix revival. Were Luke and Lorelai really perfect for each other, though? If you look closely, there were a few moments in the show’s original run when it seemed glaringly obvious that the couple was not right for each other at all.

Luke spent years pining for Lorelai but never bothered to say anything

Luke and Lorelai’s will-they-won’t-they trope helped propel the show’s storyline, but if you look at it from a different angle, it was actually kind of pathetic. The surly diner owner was clearly in love with Lorelai from the very beginning. He could barely stomach the idea of telling his then-girlfriend, Rachel, that he and Lorelai were just friends. Everyone in Stars Hollow seemed to know that Luke only had eyes for Lorelai, too. Still, he didn’t bother to tell her.

Not only did Luke not bother to tell Lorelai how he felt, but he got downright hostile when he thought she was still seeing Jason Stiles. Luke’s indignation that Lorelai didn’t instinctively know he was trying to woo her didn’t sit right with some fans.

Luke and Lorelai were both too stubborn to talk about their problems

Luke may have pined for Lorelai for years before he finally kissed her on the front porch of the Dragonfly Inn, but that doesn’t mean he was on his best behavior when they finally got their relationship going. The honeymoon phase of their courtship was relatively short-lived, and by their second go-around, it was clear they were dealing with one big problem. Luke and Lorelai could not effectively communicate with each other.

Luke didn’t bother to tell Lorelai he had a daughter for months. Lorelai couldn’t muster up the courage to tell Luke she didn’t want to sell her house and live in the much larger home he purchased for them. Frankly, it seemed like anything more than surface banter between the pair was painful. That was fine for them as friends but didn’t work once they were romantically linked.

Lorelai sleeping with Christopher made Gilmore Girls fans think she wasn’t ever all-in on Luke

Both Luke and Lorelai messed up during their courtship. They both failed spectacularly when it came to communication, and Luke’s grumpy personality really seemed to weigh Lorelai down. Still, Lorelai destroyed any semblance of a normal relationship when she slept with Christopher Hayden. Her timing made it even worse. Hopping into bed with another man, especially someone like Christopher, the same night she ended her engagement didn’t make it seem like she was completely sold on marrying Luke.

Reddit users point out that Lorelai and Christopher always appeared to have more sexual chemistry than Luke and Lorelai, anyway. Their short-lived marriage seemed to be further proof that Lorelai couldn’t choose between two men. If that’s the case, then maybe neither man was “the one.” In the end, Lorelai ended up with Luke; thrilling Gilmore Girls fans the world over. Still, that doesn’t mean they were exactly “relationship goals.”
