‘Gilmore Girls’: The Best Opening Scenes of the Series, According to Reddit
Many Gilmore Girls fans can agree that each episode of the comedy series is filled with hilarious moments from start to finish. Some of the best moments of the show occurred even before the opening credits rolled with the iconic Carole King theme song. Which Gilmore Girls opening scenes captured fans’ hearts the most? Here’s what a few Reddit forums had to say.
The morning after the Stars Hollow dance marathon
Gilmore Girls fans mentioned the opening scene of season 3 episode 8, “Let the Games Begin,” in a few different Reddit threads. This scene took place the morning after the Stars Hallow dance marathon, where Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) danced for 24 hours straight. The girls trudged along to Luke’s Diner but found that their feet hurt too much to walk. Lorelai and Rory stopped for a break on a hay bale, where two fan-favorite conversations ensued.
A sleep-deprived Lorelai began talking about “that time where I did the thing” and Rory’s feet hurt. An equally sleep-deprived Rory had no idea what her mother meant, but by the time she questioned it, Lorelai had forgotten the conversation.
Just a few moments later, Lorelai and Rory tried to use their “combined psychic powers” to move Luke’s Diner closer to them to avoid walking. Of course, it didn’t work, and Lorelai took the blame because she couldn’t concentrate. Many fans found that Graham and Bledel perfectly executed the nonsensical conversations.
Friday night with no Gilmore dinner
One of Reddit’s most upvoted Gilmore Girls opening scene discussions featured season 3 episode 19: “Keg! Max!” In this episode, Rory and Lorelai discussed what to do on their first Friday night without a dinner at Richard (Edward Herrmann) and Emily Gilmore’s (Kelly Bishop) house. Lorelai assumed that her parents would eat alone that night. However, when Rory called the house to say hello, she discovered that the Gilmores threw a party.
Richard explained to Rory that they put together a last-minute party with 55-60 people. Meanwhile, Lorelai listened to Rory’s end of the conversation intently, “appalled” by what she heard.
“A guy named Lloyd is feeling up grandma,” Rory said at one point, which prompted Lorelai to say, “You’re making this up!”
“The acting in this scene is hilarious,” the Reddit user wrote.
The Gilmores start their day
Another commonly-mentioned Gilmore Girls opening scene was season 1 episode 12, “Double Date.” This unique cold open featured no dialogue. Instead, Lorelai and Rory went through their morning routine to the tune of XTC’s “Earn Enough for Us.”
The simple yet intriguing scene showed the mother-daughter duo preparing for their day they brewed coffee and warmed up Pop-Tarts before heading out for work and school. The final moment featured a bit of humor; Lorelai removed a hair clip from Rory’s head and threw it on the ground with a disapproving look on her face.
Many fans loved this scene because of how different it was from other Gilmore Girls openers. Although it didn’t quite have the same humor as other cold opens did, the scene offered a glimpse into an often unseen part of the Gilmores’ day. Additionally, it showed just how in sync Lorelai and Rory were.
