Gilmore Girls fans might have noticed that Amy Sherman-Palladino filled the cast with taller than average men. Lauren Graham, the actor who played Lorelai Gilmore, once quipped that they found all the tall men in Hollywood to play her love interests. Scott Cohen, the actor who took on the role of Max Medina, Scott Patterson, best known for his time as Luke Danes, and David Sutcliffe, the actor who played Christopher Hayden, were all over six feet tall. Surprisingly, they were not the tallest members of the cast, though.

Dean Forrester, Rory’s very first boyfriend, was pretty tall. Lorelai once suggested he reminded her of Christopher, Rory’s father. Miss Patty noted Dean’s height in season 1. he was much taller than Rory and the rest of the teens in Stars Hollow, too. So, exactly how tall was Dean?
In season 1, Dean stated that he was 6’2, and asked Rory if that was too tall. Jared Padalecki, the actor who portrayed Dean for five seasons of Gilmore Girls, was only 17 when he landed his role on the show. Several sources list Padalecki’s adult height at 6’4.

Richard Gilmore, Lorelai’s father and Rory’s Grandfather, was pretty tall, too. Ed Herrmann, the actor who portrayed Richard for seven seasons, was known for his height. It is what helped him land some of his most iconic roles. So, exactly how tall was he? Herrmann, and consequently, his character, Richard, was 6’5.
Herrmann looked substantially taller than everyone else in Gilmore Girls because the ladies he was commonly in scenes with were significantly shorter than him, as were most of the men. Kelly Bishop, the actor who played Richard’s wife, Emily Gilmore, is just 5’6. Graham is 5’9, and Alexis Bledel, the actor who took on the role of Rory, is 5’7.
Morey Dell was the tallest character on Gilmore Girls
While Herrmann’s extraordinary height is noteworthy, he still wasn’t the tallest character on Gilmore Girls. That distinction goes to Morey Dell. Morey, portrayed by Ted Rooney, was married to Babette Dell. Fans may remember Babette, played by Sally Struthers, as Rory and Lorelai’s eccentric but incredibly kind neighbor.
Gilmore Girls fans couldn’t help but notice that Morey and Babette had a big height difference. Struthers is just 5’1. Rooney, who played semi-professional basketball before getting into acting, is a staggering 6’6. Rooney and Struthers both reprised their roles in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
