Netflix released Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life in November 2016. The revival was heavily watched by fans, and the merits of the four-part special have been hotly debated ever since. Shortly after the reboot dropped, rumors about a second season began circulating. To be fair, the ending of the revival practically begs for a second season. Still, nothing has happened. Nearly six years later, fans are still waiting. While there have been several false alarms in the past, a lot of recent developments hint that a second season might be happening sooner rather than later. Let’s look at three of the biggest hints.
A rewatch podcast has some fans thinking a second revival could be on the way
Rewatch Podcasts are popular right now. I Heart Media, the production company behind Scott Patterson’s Gilmore Girls rewatch podcast, I Am All In, has been a bit of a pioneer in the genre. Still, Gilmore Girls fans can’t help but wonder if Patterson’s podcast is doing more than just discussing the series. Could he be testing the waters?
While not every rewatch podcast will lead to a reboot, it does feel like some are trying to gauge how popular a show’s reboot could be. The format of Patterson’s podcast feels like it could be subtly jockeying for a second revival season. So far, Patterson, who played Luke Danes on Gilmore Girls, has asked most special guests whether they are Team Logan, Team Jess, or Team Dean. The question refers to which one of Rory Gilmore’s boyfriends is the best fit for her. Rory’s romantic life would likely be the focus of a second revival season.
The ‘Gilmore Girls’ Instagram page has been especially active recently
If our theory is right and Patterson is testing the waters for a second reboot, he wouldn’t be the only one involved with the series doing it. The Gilmore Girls social media pages appear to be doing the same. Shortly after the revival, the show’s Instagram and Twitter profiles fell silent. A couple of years ago, they whirred back to life, but posting was sporadic.
Since February 2022, the show’s Instagram account has been posting much more regularly. In fact, the official Gilmore Girls Instagram account is now averaging one post every four days. You could theorize that the new posting schedule is a way to maintain fans’ interest for the eventual announcement of a second revival season.
Amy Sherman-Palladino and the cast aren’t shy about their feelings on ‘Gilmore Girls’
In the years since Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was released, the cast has regularly fielded questions about the series and the potential of a second season. In the past, cast members and famed showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino were very guarded with their answers. That has changed recently.
In the last year, the cast and crew have been more willing to openly discuss whether or not they would be ready to return for a season 2. Scott Patterson was notoriously on the fence about the prospect, but in the last 12 months, he has become enthusiastic about the idea.
Sherman-Palladino, who has been busy with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, has a lull in her schedule coming up and has been more forthcoming about her thoughts on a second revival. In March 2022, Sherman-Palladino revealed to Us Weekly that timing is the only thing standing in the way of a second revival season.
While there are plenty of hints that make fans believe a second Gilmore Girls revival could be in the works, there has been no official word from Sherman-Palladino, the cast, or Netflix. Fans will just need to keep an eye out for future announcements. We’ll be waiting, too.
