Luke Danes and Lorelai Gilmore were, to fans, the perfect couple on Gilmore Girls. The chemistry between the two was evident from the moment they first shared a scene. You can understand, then, that it was pretty disheartening when rumors suggested Lauren Graham, who portrayed Lorelai, and Scott Patterson, who took on the role of Luke, actually disliked each other in real life. So, are the rumors true, and where did they get started?

Lauren Graham maintains that she and Scott Patterson get along just fine

Graham, to this day, maintains that any talk of a feud is highly overblown. She insists that she and Patterson have a perfectly great working relationship. The Gilmore Girls star talked to TV Guide in 2007 about the relationship and put the rumors to rest. She told the publication that her relationship with Patterson was, “ Totally great. It’s a working relationship, like most of them are. But he was so great in that part. I really loved my scenes with him and the chemistry we had. Our banter was among the most fun stuff to do.”

Graham has admitted to having closer relationships with Lorelai’s other love interests, though. She and Chris Eigeman, for example, were friends for years before he was cast in Gilmore Girls. Eigeman portrayed Jason Stiles in season 4 of the series and returned for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Graham also noted that she had a friendlier relationship with David Sutcliffe, who portrayed Christopher Hayden for all seven seasons.

Scott Patterson seemed to have an instant attraction to Lauren Graham

If there was a feud between Patterson and Graham, it didn’t start at the beginning of the series. Patterson has been pretty open in interviews about his first impression of Graham. In an interview with Glamour, Patterson claimed the only thing he could think about when he first met Graham was keeping things professional. In short, he thought she was pretty cute.

Patterson admits to spending time with some of the cast members and not others today, though. He told the publication that he and Milo Ventimiglia still get together from time to time. Ventimiglia portrayed Jess Mariano, Luke’s nephew on-and-off for several seasons. He did note that he “runs into” Graham from around town, but it doesn’t sound like they ever plan an outing to reconnect.

How did the rumors begin?

So there you have it, the Gilmore Girls’ premiere couple were only perfect together on the show. Graham and Patterson aren’t best friends, but they also don’t seem to hate each other. If that’s the case, where did all of the rumors come from? Graham appears to be the reason the rumors got started in the first place.

Somewhere along the way, Graham gave an interview about Gilmore Girls. The Parenthood star was asked if she and Patterson were best friends in real life, and Graham’s answer set off alarm bells with fans. Graham quickly said “no.” and moved on to the next question. The response’s terse nature led many people to believe that there was more to the story and a deep feud was brewing. Apparently, that wasn’t the case.
